    Here is a slight update.

for the past couple of days after school my dad n i have still been trying to get the welsch plugs sorted. took us a full 2 days to get those little f*****s out hahaha. extremely frustrating.

got some new ones but couldnt get the right ones. first we thought it would be 36mm so we went all over looking for em but no one had them. got them ordered in and they ddint fit. ordered 37mm and now they wont go in!!!!

we are going crazy as nothing we do seems to be going the correct way, and to make it worse its really hard to work where those plugs go as there is very little space to move around.

half the exhaust was taken off today and tomoro its coming off. hopefully thats more room to work

hopefully be done by sunday. hoping to get a duckbill in time and waiting upon the engine arivall.

VW have odd sized plugs that are really only readily available from VW parts suppliers, not generic parts suppliers.

You could try ordering from US:

Guys, how can it be a swallowtail without an actual swallowtail? A GLI has most of the features of a GTI but its not a GTI.....

Some sad news to come ahead is that i might not be takign the golf to DUBFESt. im really sad to say that as i put much effort for the past weeks to get it spic n span clean.

i was REALLY looking forward to it but i doubt the golf will make it. ill still be attending though, wouldnt miss this for the world.

One a good note, i got a Duckbill spoiler thanks to MIKA today.
another good note is that the engine arrived with the 5 speed box compliments to GOLF LOON. ill start work nxt monday or tuesday as i have a packed weekend.

i have also noticed the difference between the swallow tail now and have realised the second golf shell i have is swallow tail. are they rare by any chance?

yo Spyda, the query before was not whether or not it was a swallowtail but whether it could be an LS or a GLS. I believe you are right that a swallowtail has to have the rear panel

Just noticed this awesome build thread. Was interesting enough, then noticed you're from Sunshine!! Gotta say I'm pretty surprised, I'm 5 mins from Sunshine and hardly ever see any other VW's around here, let alone any MK1's. I'll have to invite myself to check it out sometime haha.

Guys who cares? This happens nearly every time someone with an early Mk1 starts a thread about their car..

Hows about we get back to the original subject matter eh?

                    • Firstly i just want to say i loved SEDF and the amount of cars that rocked up was mad!! It was good to put some usernames to faces haha and glad to meet the ppl i did.

After SEDF i got to work on taking out the engine. I took off the the radiator and disconnected the clutch cable and most of the wires etc. got distracted and stopped.

Tomorrow im going to start cleaning and polishing up the MK3 engine and gearbox.
going to be maybe giving the block and box a spray in grey??

what are the thoughts on what paint to look, and if not paint, how can i polish it up nice and clean to look good??

                      heres a bit of progress

                        • Started cleaning the engine today and just looking around to see what goes where, and what will fit. Started taking off the two maifolds although the top one needs to come off before the exhaust manifold, and they both block eachother and it dont have the long alan key that gets inbetween the two. Ill have to ask a friend or something for that.

also took a bit of the 1.6 out, got the alternator out and the brackets for the 1.8. disconnected the CV joints aswell. ill be looking for paint tomorrow and i need to think of what colour to paint the block and gearbox. So far i have silver in mind or a nice metal silver/grey. does anyone know if i get heat resistent spray paint, how long it will stay and how do i clean/ prepare the block n box to do so, sand it down slightly or what??

                          heres some pics

                          The new engine and box.

                              • Just went to a local paint shop and got MotoSpray all purpose heat proof paint and the guy said i should do as less coats as i can ??

I havnt been doing my homework for a while so ill do it today. Tmoro ill be cleanign the block and gearbox and after that ill be spraying it as well as the engine bay.

Anyone have any idea how to clean the block in order to spray it? The guy at the paint shop said i shouldnt use petrol as it has oil in it and the paint wont stick. any suggestions
