  • The thing I need to work out is a tow hitch as the 76 didnt have one.

So I seem to have a bit of oil under the car after the track day. Seems it's from the gear box seals on the driveshafts mainly. I'm reluctant to do it but maybe I'm going to need to do some overhauling soon. :/

Don't worry once the level drops below the seals they stop leaking. Sounds a bit dodgey but it's true.

Ha, but you know what they say, until you have done a job yourself you don't know how it has been done. I feel that I should not panic but plan to give it a once over some time soon.

        • Tow hitch is pretty straight forward mik, weld a piece of reinforcing plate to the outside of the main bumper bracket where the bolts screw into then heat and bend some good 6-10 mm steel rod and weld it onto your reinforced bumper support. That way you 1) don't have to weld onto your car and then repaint, 2) easy to work on as the bumper comes off for easy mod access 3) can be painted and hidden away with the risk of nasty overspray/metal slag damaging your nice paint.

Gearbox seals on the final drive are a piece of piss to do mate and if say you look on bus depot they cost a pittance. Just unbolt the inner shaft, remove the circlip to take off the drive shaft flange, pull out the old seal and install the new. I would recommend doing it because the oil gets into the CV's and washes all of the grease out and then if the boot fails out comes the oil all over your engine bay (and hot exhaust!!!!) and at worst your tyres whilst giving it stick on the race track.

I had one go on me whilst racing and it let off a massive cloud of smoke when it hit the hot exhaust, thought the engine was on fire. Was a massive P.I.A. to clean because hot thin oil went EVERYWHERE.

X2, one of my CV's (inner of course) was "dry" on the side closest to the seal.
The worst part of the job is finding that 12pointed star tool to take the CV/driveshaft off!

            • i just use vice grips, so much easier and no chance of stripping out the inside of the bolt. Just make sure it is nice and tight

              • Thanks for the tips guys. I spose if they are this easy to do I should do them and replace the CV boot/grease at the same time. Then if there are still leaks, I can only assume it is the main gearbox seal

Would it be possible to make a bracket that is not welded to the bumper so it sat between the bumper mount and the mounting point on the chassis? I'd rather not weld on to the bumper if possible. I think you'll get what I mean.

I want to do the exact same mate.

When I get my car back I'll work it out and make 2, how's that sound?

Like a plan. I'd say there are a few out there in the same boat. Gives Alex a break from the welder as well!

                    • yeah it will be very easy to make a bracket that will bolt in but the bitch will be trying to line it all up to bolt up the bumper. It an be fiddly enough with just the bumper with everything in the way
