  • I'll be sticking with a DPF mate, I confirmed with a phonecall to QLD transport what Guy alluded to in another thread, the maximum fines for DPF removal are immense for a commercial entity, and whilst they wouldn't quantify for an individual, ( it's done on a case by case basis ) it was unlikely you would get $10k on a first offence. They did say that it was like a machinery inspection where once reported, you get a letter to fix it, and if you get reported three times over 4 months, you have to front up to have it tested. Each letter requires a response to say how you fixed it. They mentioned mobile roadside emission testing, but a bit of net research says they are large units in the back if a station wagon, so not something your local copper will be carting around, and few and far between. I've never seen one.

The tinkering continues, I'm back onto the idea of a higher flow DPF, and talking to companies about that. I'll still get Gav to tune the bejesus out of what I end up with though!!

    • That sucks.

This DPF stuff is a load of **** anyway.

      • The proper final Samco silicon elbow FINALLY showed up last week, put it in on the weekend. Great to have it finished, and I'm able to get up it without ( too much ) fear of blowing a boot.

Also decided while at Supercheap this arvo, to grab two bottles and have a go and see what happened. Need to take it for a decent drive, but initial results even with this lowly concentration is WOW.....will buy a real tin of methanol now the intake is sound. Wonder if the rainex treatment will lower friction in my manifold?

        • Haha. Excellent work. I'm tempted to try a boost reference only kit on the Caddy.

          • OK, took it for a decent drive, and it feels better on boost, but not amazingly so. I came home and pulled out my old chemistry textbook from Uni and did some calculations - seems this washer fluid at 40g/L is only 4%!! Damn! I looked up it's MSDS and it is more alcohol and ethanol, so perhaps they are burning too, but think I'll just transfer it across to my actual washer bottle and go get some real stuff.

I'm like a heroin junkie, walking around looking for anything containing methanol.....need a fix.....

            • Jeez Greg, you remind me of a character off a TV series called Father Ted (UK) His name is Father Jack Hackett and he'll drink just about anything going too, I'd bet money he's probably tried a drop or two of the old Rainex as well

Nice to see the tinkering is still continuing and I guess now that the warranty has expired it's no holds barred and full steam ahead. I'm glad to see that you're at least planning within the legal guide lines when it comes to the bloody DPF (pain in the butt) even though I no longer have my GT and have gone back to the blue oval I will still drop in from time to time to see how it's all panning, best of luck with it all mate

              • Thanks Russ,

Yeah it's a bit lonely now in GT tinker land, all the "old crew" have hit the 3 year mark and upgraded, and even gone onto other brands. When I started out there was quite a "group" and almost all of them have moved on as is the way.

I've been tempted to do the same, especially with the potential injector issue the GT TDI has, but so too someone needs to help champion it, a lot of cars are affected. Also, of all the cars I'd rather have, the two main ones are still too new and way out of my price range, that is the 330d or the latest Audi 3.0 TDI, and even though I could afford a 2008 Audi 3.0 TDI, I'm convinced it has the same Siemens pizeo injectors, and the same chance of failure. I've come this far, and am determined to finish what I started, even though it will be pretty silly in a FWD, as there's nothing out there in oiler land that excites me enough to change, and it's nice to finally keep a car long enough that you start to owe less than it's worth at bottom of the market. I'm a bit over superficial debt to be honest, and more interested in pouring it in the biz, and get a car via that one day rather than tying myself into my job for a further 3-5 years for a new toy.

So too, I do love the GT, it's a blast in the hills, and I came back from Toowoomba on Tuesday evening through Laidley and then over Mt Glorious and Mt Nebo down to The Gap, and it reminded me why I love this little diesel so much, just a barrel of fun. I used up the remainer of the Rainex on that little blast, so now it's time to get some real Methanol, and see what happens. Good things I expect.

I can't WAIT to tune it, for it runs SO well at the moment even with the stock ECU and exhaust ( mostly ). I'm going to trial a partial flow ( high flow ) DPF on my car, and get Gav to do the Custom Code delete tune ( and then some ) and see what's possible with a *legalish* car, and all the mods I've spent far too much time doing. I'm finally getting close, it's down to a dump pipe now....

At least when I get my hands on a "real" RWD or AWD diesel, I'll know exactly what to do!

                • Good to see you are still championing the GT TDI cause Greg.
Must have been a nervous key turn when you swapped over the loom.

Hopefully we can see you at the Euro Meet on the 15th.

                  • Yeah Miro, lets start a new sticky thread, and I can do a proper writeup. We need someone to look up the VW Australia part number, as it is real tricky to put in this different one, took me all arvo.

                    • good stuf Greg!

I finally bit the bullet and got my hands on a CC tune for the Polo. Very impressed with the initial results, see my review. You'll be in for a treat for sure! I'd love to get my hands on a DPF delete tuned GT TDI for a bit of a fang, I recon it would be a fair weapon!

                      • To say I'm hanging is an understatement Josh, but it's taken a lot of tangents to come up with the right solution to the DPF, and I'm hopeful this is finally it. Glad to see Gav working his magic on your beasty.

I took a video if the induction noise in my TDI, it gives you a fair idea to just how crazy it really is, and I drive it real quiet in carparks and other public enclosed spaces, but I'm certain there's a lot less restriction between the intake and the engine than VW delivered it with!

The filter I am using made a lot of difference to the induction noise, as it has an open front design.

I've gone back to a K&N oiled one, as I was finding some fine dust in the intake from the Apexi, even though I've been swapping them out at about 30k's. I'd rather possible MAF issues from the oil over dust chewing out the poor TDI's innards.

                            • Spent Saturday arvo making up a jig to fab up my experimental DPF dump pipe. My plan is to put the experimental partial flow core into the stock housing, fix up the restrictive outlet, and bolt it up to the 42DD mid pipe where their dump systems join. I based the wood jig on the Miltek delete pipe I have currently borrowed, and the stock DPF I have been cutting up.

                              • And here is the challenge, to get a flex and 3" pipes between the DPF body, and the 42DD flange.

Amazingly there is a ton of room below the DPF outlet, and the only real concern is the final pic showing the steering that the stock pipe weaves around, when viewed from the front, directly underneath - the engine is at the top of the photo. The only point that gets close is right down near the 42DD flange, so I'm quite confident a decent pipe will fit with nice mandrel bends straight out of the DPF cannister.
