    • Here are some pictures of the inlet tract after 170,000km.
I'm going through that website, I will translate any useful info I find and post here.

These were not my pictures, I found that website.
Some posters there soak it in the brake fluid for 3 days and than wash it of with degreaser. Some use kerosene and hot soapy water. Of course parts removed from engine. These were very high mileage engines with + 170,000 km.

          • I'm happy in the knowledge this will never be my problem.

never say never - you'll jinx yourself!

we burned it out on mollins' tdi manifold... once it had burned for a while (getting rid of the oil) the carbon deposits just fell off... i guess this would be difficult on plastic bits

              • This is making me have some serious doubts about getting a 2.0TDi Tiguan.

I believe this will be a problem in tiguans as they also have an EGR system.
                Can anyone clarify this?

Have we found any effective solutions apart from the ProVent system?

Any think in diesel you buy today will have the same EGR setup and the same problem. That problem can be reduced or completely eliminated by fitting MAN PROVENT. I fitted to my T5 and at almost 70,000km I don't see any build up in my inlet tract.
These pictures you saw were from engines which done close to 200,000km and oil changes were done at mostly 2years interval or other vise cars were driven in longlife service regime.

I also considering Tiguan as replacement for our aging Forester, and that would not be the turning off point for me. Tiguan is on sale for over year now and nobody is complaining too much or I can even say at all, so Tig could be very reliable car in long run indeed.

                    Okay, thanks for that.
I had a read through the whole thread and the only solutions seem to be the VAGCOM setting and ProVent fitting.

I realise this takes a while to build up in engines (somewhere around 150k - 200k) but i would still look at fitting a ProVent system as soon as i could if i got the diesel Tig.

The main reason i was asking is that i have to justify the extra 3k in the RRP and then extra if i needed to do work on the EGR to get the TDi over the petrol.

                    • It's pretty simple to justify the hassle, for once the price of fuel gets ludicrous, given the depression delay in oil and fuel infrastructure at present, and the massive demand spike that will happen in a year or so time when things recover, everyone will be wanting to get as many km's out of each $2.50 per litre they can. My money is on the fact petrol will go over $2 early next year, and keep climbing. In the 2-4 years most people keep newer cars, fuel is going to become a major cost component.

I figure the hassle with a Provent vs preparing for "mad max" times is worthwhile. Heck, come armageddon, you can make your own diesel from the zombies you catch.

It depends how do you drive. If you drive gently (normally) than petrol engine would still return good fuel economy. But should the fuel prices move sharply up, than even 2 liters difference in fuel economy would be a big amount over longer period of time. I prefer diesel you can still push engine hard, have a little bit of fun and fuel consumption is still good.

I used to deal with similar carbon build-ups in the aircraft industry.

We had a 2000L tank of heated >brain faid< (some type of drain cleaner that came in flakes & stunk). The heat was quite high - maybe 10c below boiling. We would throw the parts in overnight and close the lid. Take it out the next day & blast it with a steam cleaner. Repeat the process until most of it was gone & give it to the bead blasters to finish it off.

                            • So who sells the Provent, I think i'll have to have one on the MkV and plum it to the exhaust seems to be a good idea.

the answer to that is covered in another thread called "the tinkering begins"
