I thought that the charging of IPODS was a problem ONLY with the newer versions, but not the earlier ones. So, I guess you are saying that the IPOD connector in the AVC is not ffeding a charge. Pity, as I would have thought this would be a basic requirement.
Having said that, I also heard that Apple were working on a adapter plug to carry a charge for the newer devices, but if the AVC is not feeding a charge, this won't help.
I guess, what you would then require is a sort of double adapter on the IPOD that takes 2 inputs. 1. from the audio feed, which you currently have, and 2. another from the usb port, to carry a charge. I don't know if such a device exists.

Here is a possible solution for your Navigation.

This is Google Street View, which works on Google Navigation. It runs on Windows Mobile5, which is the O/S for the AVC.
Download it to a SD card, and use it as your default Navigation program.
Before you ask, NO, I have not yet tested it.
From what I can see, the only drawback is that you need to download image maps as you require them. This could end up expensive if you are using a mobile phone as your modem. However, I think you may be able to download these on a PC, then transfer to your SD card. The other drawback might be the space required on your card. If anyone beats me to it, and tries it, please give feedback.

The issues i had with the sat nav not picking up a signal seems to fix when you stop the car and stay still in one spot for a minute or so. Im thinking that because the GPS antenna is under the the dash reception suffers.

I have just relocated mine onto the dash, between the centre grill and the windscreen. I also was getting too many sat dropouts. I routed the cable via the demister vent so it looks neat.
I will be testing it in the next day or so.

Just did this with my one, noticed it took a while to get lock on cloudy days here in Perth so 20mins after starting the dash was all back in place and the sat antenna now sits in the area between the 2 windscreen vents with the cable routed out through (or should that be in) the air vent, looks good and works really well. Noticed a considerable increase in satellite signal stregnths too, locks on a lot fast as well.. Cheers for the tip

Hi all,
After reading all 31 pages of this thread (and I am sure forgetting the detail of lots of bits) I have purchased from Rob at Austpacks his "last" (I think) AVC9000 to go in the golf.
Car is '08 Golf Pacific.
I notice lots of references to things not quite right the first time with installs and people thanking people for help and advice... Is there a concise "how to" instruction posted anywhere for installing this unit? I am hoping mine will be delivered next week, and would *really* like to only have to pull things to bits once, and not (for example) blow anything up that needs capacitors or diodes replacing!

No. Is the short answer.
It is really dependent on how much of it you also wish to install.
Besides the headunit, there is TV, Rear Cam, SatNav.
The headunit itself is fairly straight forward. Simple plug n Play, with only 1 lead to confuse. It is a lead from the adapter box which appears to plug into it's own loom. Not hard, but you wonder about it's purpose.
2nd issue is to where to install the SatNav antenna. Many use doublesided tape and install under the centre grill. I personally found that the metal grill surface blocked too much of the GPS signal, so few it through the windsceen vent and stuck it on the dash, near the light sensor.
3rd issue, is the rear cam. This is the hardest part, as you need to find a location for the cam, as well as feed wire through the car and connect to the reverse light. This is time consuming, especially if you want to do it neatly.
4th issue, the TV. I don't know many who have installed this. It is analogue, so reception will almost always be crap.
Finally there is the setting up of the screen. Fairly straight forward, with the only problem being that the manual is not all that thorough, and misses stuff.

Head Unit
- Easy plug 'n play install for main wiring harness
- You need to connect the 'remote' receiver plug from one side of the wiring loom to the input on the other side of the head unit (wires are tagged). Then bind with electrical tape to secure in place. (Why it's not pre-wired???)

DVD
To enable DVD/TV playback during travel, you need to earth the handbrake (tagged) wire to the chassis

Radio
Radio antenna wire needs to be plugged in. Only single plug on head unit, but 'most' VW will have two antenna wires (brown & white). Either purchase a wiring setup to convert this back to one plug, or just use the brown (mixed results for only using one antenna)

GPS
Antenna needs to be able to see the sky. Mine is mounted under the dash 'grill' without issues (too the right side, level, and stuck with double sided tape to the bottom of the tray). So other members have had to move the antenna to the top of the dash (cable via the windscreen air vent)

Reverse Camera
Wire required to be run from head unit to rear of car. Use packaged 'reverse camera loom' to connect camera to wire from head unit. Reverse light wire can be used to 'activate' reverse (head unit will automatically change to reverse camera when car placed in reverse). Hardest part of the install, well worth the effort.

TV
Haven't bothered.

Well, what do I have now: radio, DVD, GPS, MP3, DivX, JPEG, iPod, USB, Bluetooth

I did not install the rear camera yet... need to get over this and drill a hole in the bumper

and didn't connect the TV antenna.

I put my GPS antenna under the dash. I took off the glove box and found a place for it. Stuck it with the provided double-side 3M tape to the metallic frame. Initially I found the place where the magnet is working and then stuck the antenna to this place. Dodn't have any problem with GPS. Usually have 6-9 satellites. Sometimes it can have 12. After initializing the GPS it locks the signal apox. in 1 to 3 minutes.

I like this unit. Good value for money. But I have some dissapointments:
- can't use bluetooth. It is very slow. The opponent doesn't hear me properly (need to speak very loud). Need to increase the volume up to 20 to hear. My Parrot bluetooth was just perfect for this.... Missing my bluetooth.
- Couldn't find a way to make volume separate for each type of use (radio, DVD, bluetooth)
- MP3 restarts from the begining after bluetooth connection
- radio signal became weaker. on some radio stations I hear the hissing noise. Didn't hear it before.

Well, this is my first impression for now... But the unit is greate for this money. And GPS (TomTom) is greate too.

Nice pics! Would you believe when I was lining up all my tools to install my unit inistially, I had the digital camera there ready to go. First picture, flat battery! I was too excited and kept installing the AV9000 instead of going for more batteries!

I too found the bluetooth disapointing, but suspect some of the problem is because the microphone was designed for LeftHand drive, and is voice activated. Seems to miss the first word spoken due to the delay in activating it. Would have been better if they had supplied a Mic jack in the rear, so that you could have installed an external one, and placed it wherever.
Has anyone worked out how to crack the Windows Operating System?
If you could get into there, you could probably install other functions.

Mine arrived yesterday, and Rob said it was his "last" in stock at the time. Ordered last week and it was sent overnight after payment.
I asked Rob in an e-mail about him going "out of business" and about warranty. He says he is trying to sell the business as a going concern and will support units already sold for warranty until or unless he sells the whole show when the new owner will have that liability.

Now for a couple of questions...
1. My unit came with the manual declaring it for VW "MAGOTAN". This is a Chinese Passat! Is this the same for others that have received these?
2. Detail of rear camera set-up...
The camera has two plugs. One for video (RCA plug) and the other presumably for power. I get the little "adaptor wire" with the bit of heat shrink covering the diode and capacitor, but can anyone confirm the wiring as follows:
(i) You run the video lead provided from the head unit to the back of car for camera.
(ii) You get some wire (not provided) and run it from head unit to back for power, You connect this wire at the head unit end to the PINK wire from the loom provided that is labelled "REVERSE CAR". The other end connects to the camera power wire.
(iii) The short plug lead which plugs into the camera cable and has red and black wires at the other end is the camera power lead. Guessing that the RED is the one to connect to the wire from the front of the car. BLACK one to EARTH locally??
(iv) The bit with the 3 coloured wires and heat-shrunk diode/capacitor is connected with RED to reversing light, BLUE to local EARTH, YELLOW to camera power (ie lead from front of car connected to RED camera power wire at (iii) above).

OK, almost right, the wire from the head unit (power) goes to one side of that little 3 wire filter, then the other (power) wire off the filter goes to your reverse light in the rear of the vehicle, the last wire of the filter goes to ground. You also need to connect the power lead from the camera to the power lead from tthe filter...

Without the 3 wire 'filter' your going to get lots of inteferance froom the motor soon as you start the car.. Looks fine whit motor off but not so nice with motor running..

Where are you located ? You should have got a piece of paper with the camera showing you how to hook up power to the camera... If your in Perth can get together to show you whats needed, done a couple already
