I was looking at a Polo the other day and decided that the shape is totally different to the Golf, sorry bout that.
Welcome to the forum too, hope you enjoy it here!
Andrew
It is probably not the device so much, but the facia around the unit.
These AVC's go into several different type of car, and the difference is mainly in the facia attached to the units.
I've just recieved an avc that i plan to fit to my jetta and have a couple of questions;
can anyone give me an idea of how i conect the reversing camera?
is it ok to just ditch the tv arial?
are there any wire conections to be made beyond straight foward plug in of wiring harnesses?
does the gps arial go under the grill on top of the dash?
The camera is the trickiest bit of the whole job but would be easier to pick up power from the light than a Golf. You need to run an extra wire from the reverse source wire down to the rear. You can leave the tv arial diconnected.
The GPS will fit under the grill with patience!!
Cheers and good luck with it,
Andrew
thanks Andrew, now I just have to work up the courage to drill a hole. Can I just check I'm sure I read on another thread something about attaching an earth wire to somewhere near the handbrake, is all the wiring done through the harness apart from running power to the camera from the reverse light?

Thanks again
I hooked up my reverse camera on the weekend. Well worth the effort.
All the wiring is done through the harness 'except' the reverse camera system.
It needs power/earth/reverse using the extra piece of wiring loom supplied. On my Passat I got my 'reverse' from the reversing light. Basically when your car is in reverse, the rear white light is lit, and sends a signal to your head unit to switch to the reverse camera.
The hardest part (mentally) is drilling a hole in the rear of your car. I placed mine next to the number plate.
MY08 Passat Sedan Metallic Silver
125KW TDI, Sat/Nav
I have installed the GPS antenna under the dash and it sometimes takes a while for the sat nav to find a GPS sattelite. Anyone else had this problem?
Thanks
Yes, i get this too on both the Route 66 and the TomTom software. i think its a function of the unit tbh, and not the antenna location.
i got all worried about the strength of the double sided tape and the heat and rattles and eventually having the antenna falling off and rattling around causing headaches. but so far so good (though i did break two of the clips on the grill as i was lifting it off - AND i was so gentle and it still broke).
Is anyone bothering with the TV antenna? I am toying with putting it on the fixed rear parcel shelf bit near the rear quarters.
as for software, i'm loving the Route66 and whatever TomTom software is on my unit i think is pretty second rate. am i the only one that seems to like the route 66?
how can you get updated voices btw?

i tried using the TV antenna by fixing it to the windscreen but it looked average and reception was not very good. i have since removed the antenna and left the wires connected (can still get some reception).
I am currently using tom tom as everyone else has said how much better it is. Does the voice over in route 66 say street names as it doesnt on tom tom?
Most GPS have a problem getting the latest fix if they are not used on a regular basis. Also, if you were in, lets say Sydney when last used, and you next active the GPS when in Melb, the software needs time to locate you accurately. it gets a little confused. Most programs now have a download facility to capture the latest "fix" As this is not possible with the TomTom or Route 66, the system will take time to calc your new location.
Also, for those placing their GPS receiver under the grill, please remember that the grill is metal, so you are effectively blocking some of the receiver from receiving the signals from the sats. This will therefore increase the number of signal dropouts you get.
If you really want best reception, you would require an external antenna, or at least move the antenna where it is not going to be blocked by metal. A more suitable location would be to attach it to the windscreen base, so that it gets as clear a view of the sky as possible. Problem with this is an unsightly wire.
From what I know, TomTom is the only program to offer multi voices over the standard 1 or 2 of other programs. It can be a bit of a novelty to have John Cleese announce your arrival at your location, and to have him tell you "Not to expect him to carry your bags"
****HELP****
And I don't need any suggestions about what I should have bought...thankyou.
The AVC is now installed...thanks zz2 & mrX (& Tim).
Problem is with the GPS (Navi) screen. It seems that the "touch" menu options on the screen are all arse about face. The icons appear in the lower half of the screen, but the touch function for each icon is diagonally opposed to where it should be. Also, the Navi screen now has moved some millimeters to the left, making it even harder to select any options.
I had taken a back up of the SD card, and since this issue, have reformatted the card and reloaded the OEM files. No good.
I have done a full reset (little pin in reset hole...top right hand corner). No good.
Radio works fine. Clock works fine. DVD works fine. Reverse camera not working yet (as the cap/diode blew up during install....awaiting new components from Radio Spares). USB connection works. BT works. Farken Navi screen is ar.e about face. Therefore no GPS software/maps etc.
Suggestions?
SORTED
Received a "patch" file from Rob (Auspack) and loaded that up tonight...it recalibrated my NAVI screen (which is where the problem was)...so all sorted. Thanks to all who offered assistance and humiliation. A big shout out goes to Andrew (gtimk5) who not only offered me valuable advice, but kept me sane and my morale in check...thanks mate. Appreciate the support.
My pleasure Steve. Slashed wrists are not the cure for an off centred screen and I hope your marriage can get back on track!!!
Only joking!!! Hope it all works well from now on,
Andrew
Straight out of the box? I doubt it.
However, what you really have is a pda computer, running Windows Mobile. Therefore, if you found out how to access the backend program, then you should be able to add the appropriate software to allow text to speech, as well as stacks of other PDA applications.
Having said that, I was under the impression that Text to Speech in Nav applications was determined by the actual Nav program. A good recent upgrade of the software, should carry that functionality. I am not only referring to the Mapping, but the software behind the maps.
Does anyone have a solution for the massively annoying problem of the AVC not charging the ipod *ever*!!!
My ipod is a bit old and battered thru over-use, so it lasts maybe 3 hours. but its a pain to turn the car off in the morning at work, lean into the glovebox, turn the ipod off, and off i go. i don't need to do that on other units that charge my ipod.
Anyone have any thoughts or suggestions?
