2. You need to check you hw_radio version. If it's 04 or below you could damage your tuner board upgrading to 4120. Difference is a male English nav voice.

Is that the "HW-Version" field?

Ah I see, after doing that I indeed get a whole bunch of extra menus. Including enable downgrade.

I also saw in one of the menus that my HW radio version is 004 so I won't be upgrading to 4120.

Sorry to be heavy, but I would like you to confirm that I definitely can not install 5238.
These are the details of my RNS 510:

HW Version H74
SW 4020
HW Vehicle 0xC001
HW Radio 0003
SW Radio EUR_CHN_1300

Are there noticeable differences between 4020 and 5238?

I know I can damage the unit, but there is no way of being able to install?
Are you going to modify in the near future fw 5238 for "A" units??

Firmware updates for European RNS510 units

I upgraded from 4Xxx to 5238 for one reason only - when giving directions the older firmware would say "DAMMA" instead of the name of the town. Ie take off ramp toward damma. 5238 fixed that. Other than that, it gives the option to turn on radio text instead of showing the station shortcut names, but it's badly implemented (could have been done in the radio station name section instead) so I leave it off.

There is only risk, not reward. There may be a modified 5238 firmware version from josi on the vwnavi forums. But there is no feature gain over the previous generation unless you have DAB hardware.
