Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

Finally it switched to German, cleared the radio of all preset stations , lost all sound and then got stuck when I tried to set it back to English.

From reading this forum it seems the solution is reloading the firmware and map. I am clueless and don't have any of the equipment such as a burner etc so I've booked the car in at my local Skoda dealer to do it. (Skoda Artarmon in Sydney).

    My questions are

    1. Any idea as to how much is this likely to cost?

    2. What firmware etc should I have installed for the most reliable performance going forward? Should I get the same firmware version reloaded again or is there a better more stable version available now that would prevent this happening again?

    3. If the maps also have to be reloaded, I might as well get the latest version compatible with my unit, what would be the most up to date version that will work with my unit once it has been repaired? Currently I have 7679.

The hidden menu on my car currently shows the following:

    Delivery part number 3T0035680B
    HW-Version H55
    SW-Version 3984
Active map coverage Australia + New Zealand
    Active map supplier Sensis
    Map version HDD 7679

    Thanks to all in advance.
Latest map is V10 and only place Ive seen it for sale is Euro Car Performance upgrades - ECU remaps - Navigation - Bluetooth - Latest Australia GPS maps - Auto electrics and is $175

        • I wouldn't have a dealer do it unless you are allergic to the money in your wallet.
You should find a friend to burn 5238 firmware for you and load that.
Buy v10 maps as well and you'll still be in a much better spot than what a dealer will charge as they will more than likely charge for diagnosis and then tell you you need to spend $3k on a new unit.

          • In my experience, dealers have no access to Firmware etc
I once had a Service Manager call me and ask if I could talk to a 'good' customer of his who needed a firmware fix on an RNS510. SM said VW couldn't assist him, but he knew that the software I had could sort the customer it. All under the table of course

            • Oh dear...thanks for the tips. I’m at the dealers now and so far they’ve had the car for two hours...

              • They told me they have access to the firmware and download the most suitable version to suit whatever unit they are repairing from the Skoda catalogue.

                • Even if someone could burn the disc for me I’m not sure I have the know how to do it myself.

                  • Well it’s done and working and I’m very happy with the service I got. They reloaded the firmware, (apparently the old one was corrupted although I still don’t know what might have caused it). Previously I was able to press and hold the Setup button for about 10 seconds and see three options, the third one being the information about what firmware etc the unit was using at that time but doing the same thing now only shows two options (AM and FM) so I’m not sure what the current firmware version is, only that it isn’t the same one as was there before. (I’m assuming it’s a more recent version). Anyway it all seemed to work well on the drive home and hopefully it will keep doing so.

                    • They also told me it’s best to keep the navigation CD in the player at all times rather than take it out after the maps have been downloaded which I had done previously. Not sure why but as I never use the CD player anyway it won’t matter.

Thats rubbish because it doesnt read off it and you actually cant reload the same version of map over itself . Been there tried that and had to load a different version to get it going again. Was back when ver 6 was not showing street names. So the CD will sit there doing absolutely nothing except gather dust and clog up the system.

                        • Well as I said I’m clueless with things like this, I can only believe what others with more knowledge than me tell me.

                          • you're not clueless.
Just reading the posts here, you now know more than the dealership.
It sounds like they have downgraded the Firmware version. Older versions would only show the '2 options' in that menu that you spoke of.
Pity you're not in Perth WA.... I'd have you sorted out inside an hour.

Someone will step up and get you back into the game with a more updated firmware etc etc.

                              • I previously had Firmware version 3984, I have no idea what version it is now as I can't check it anymore but it's doing all I need which is the radio, GPS navigation and mirroring from my iphone. I don't need to download/listen to music, watch videos or anything else so I may not need more recent Firmware anyway, and I'm not sure what the newer Firmware versions do that this one doesn't. FJ Steve, thanks for that, if it stops working again I'll send it to you for fixing!
