Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

  • Hi Everyone.

I've got a 2011 Passat CC and have just used the information and files located in this thread to upgrade my RNS 510 to a newer SW 5238 version.
I bought a Australian V8 map on DVD from JKU on the Sunshine Coast so undated the maps while I was at it.

All seems to have gone well as now I get the radio texts with the current song etc, can now see the hidden menu for showing what software i'm running and the video in motion is also working. It took about an hour to install and a few minutes driving around for the GPS to get a fix on me.

However, I have noticed 1 item I think has changed for the worse.

When reversing - the rear view camera shows on the screen, along with the top view of the CC on the left hand side for the OPS.

The OPS is not completely transparent, there seems to be a grey fan shaped area where the orange and red lines show how close you are to an object. I'm sure before the upgrade it was totally transparent.

Can anyone confirm ? Any ideas where I can find the information to make it transparent once again as it spoils the rear view camera picture as the view is now greyed out under the fan of the OPS ?

    Thanks

    • They did change the OPS view and made it more granular for newer PDC controllers.
It is more accurate as it now shows more radar increments.
You can always close the OPS view and just see the RVC and listen to the PDC beeps if you prefer.
There is no way to change the actual settings of the OPS view itself.

      • Thanks for the reply.

I'll just have to get used to it, and as you said, minimize the OPS when the rear view camera is on if it is annoying me.

        Cheers

        • Hi everyone,

My RNS510 in my Tig has gained a corrupted boot screen (the image is all twisted and displays in out-of-alignment horizontal bands. I'm trying to fix it so it looks correct on start-up (thinking about selling the car) but I can't get to the ISO creation site any more (seems to have been taken down).

Does anyone have a way to create the ISO so I can reload the original file?

              • FW 5238 Upgrade & problems.

I apologise upfront for a verbose post; but tried my best to be accurate & concise with the problem.

Tiguan bought new 2009 (great car) in Penrith (Ver 2 Map). First problem to show up was F3 Wyong "Black Hole" - system crashed, then after a few minutes, rebooted. Dealer told me problem was I lost a satellite at that point!!

Took it back again after next occurrance to service manager this time; Dealer returned the vehicle after having it all day, "fixed"; but nothing changed. Tried reloading the Ver 2 map myself only to get "CD/DVD ERROR"!

So in frustration just lived with the problem.

Then, bought Ver 7 Map from Dealer when it came out, thinking it was a programming problem in Ver 2 Map: only to be greeted with the same error message!

Thinking then it might be a FW problem, came across this tread after much searching (Google search) & followed Kamold's notes exactly to upgrade, which seem to work a treat (many thanks).

Tried loading Ver 7 maps again.....same error message splashed the screen!!

Decided then the DVD optical reader must be at fault - no problems reading CD's; just won't load DVD''s.

BUT THEN; if that was the case, why did the DVD work successfully with the FW upgrade?

                Anyway, decided to replace the DVD; purchased online from cars-equipment.com (cz);
                ORIGINAL DVD

                NEW DVD

After installing the new DVD & switching the unit on, without inserting the key, the very first screen splash appeared with :

"Loading CD/DVD Please wait...."!! I hadn't put a DVD near the thing!

This was then followed with the next one "CD/DVD ERROR". I tried inserting a CD into the machine, but it was locked closed. So that just seemed a big waste of money!!

So after all this I've just put the old DVD back in - at least it "half works"; but still no maps installed.

The only thing it seems is to copy (?) the Ver 7 map onto an SD card & install it from there?

Extremely frustrating to say the least. Just hoping someone might be able to shed some light on the problem what I'm doing wrong.

ANY advise would be greatly appreciated...

                • There is a utility available to load Maps from SD card online somewhere though I've never used it.
If you are in Sydney happy to take a look at it for you some time.

                  • I have found that you cant reinstall the same version map over itself EG 7 over 7. You can load 6 over it and then 7 but not the same one.

Was that unit new in the car or an EBay special????.

Also best to use a DVD burned as slow as possible if a copy.

SD action was dead end - as DVD not working to load software.

New DVD faulty - locked closed & unable to load DVD.

Now have no function, but the radio.
Press the media button after 5min & get the screen below.

Interrogate secret menu for DVD status & get screen below after 5 min.

Any suggestions for replacement would be greatly appreciated?

                        • If you want to drop the unit and drives to me I can see what I can do for you.
Have tools to connect via the multimedia adapter at back to the system.
I can work on it on the bench.

                            Thank you again.

                            • Hello good people! More anxiety in my future with a forthcoming dreaded firmware update but a couple of quick confirmations first

My RNS510 (HW: C, FW: 3810) started playing up a few months ago and navigation will only work with the disk inserted.... no worries, I listen to ABC all the time anyway and don't use the navigation much. I figured my 2016 Christmas holidays project would be to install a new SSD to see if it would solve the problem ~ popped in here to see if there was a specific 3810 firmware available for the PATA 64Gig SSD I've ordered..... and low and behold, firmware 523x is on the front page and will apparently work with my older unit (previously 4020 was as high as I could go!)..... so, this now has me wondering:

                              A) 523x... really, it will work?
                              B) Do I need to do anything special or are the ratios all good with 523x for a 64G SSD?
                              C) IF it fails, will my old FW 3810 installation disk download from Dec/2014 be ok to install over the top of any partitions created by the 523x firmware on the new SSD?
                              D) Anything else I may not be aware of.... (does the SSD need to be formatted in any particular way before install?)

Thanks for any advice, it's been 2 years since my last firmware update adventure and I'm feeling the heat already!!!! It's a different ball game with a possible new FW being thrown into the equation

                              • a. Yes it will.
                                b. No
                                c. There is no need to go back to an earlier version. In fact 3810 was a beta release and should not in general be used
                                d. No, the firmware install will format the drive appropriately
                                e. If you go into the 'hidden' menu (by holding down the setup button for 30 seconds) what does it show for HDD status? You may be able to resolve the issues by simply upgrading firmware (which will reformat the HDD) and reinstalling maps.
