Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

The RNS510 doesn't show in the secret menu its firmware version. Only shows the AM/FM radio manager settings. I don't have a cable to interrogate the computer so I'm guessing the only way I can see what firmware version the unit is sitting on is to open the thing up and look at the sticker.

Question though is, how? How do I get about getting at the unit? Is there a guide showing me potentially what tools I'll need which will let me get the covering surround off without damaging the clips so I can unscrew and look at the sticker?
Download 4020 and try it My mid 2010 had 2860 or similar It now has 4120.

    • Cheers - thank you very much - I'll get a set of those tools.

Is there some sort of guide or an image where I can reference to see where the clips sit and how it is to be used?

      • Don't really need trim tools to get the head unit surround off. Just pry off with your fingers under the bottom edge.
Then you have 4 T20 Torx screws.

But I wouldn't bother with any of that.
Your unit if factory fitted will be running 2760.
        Just load 4120.

        • 're Zheino SSD...
Any idea what controller it uses? I noted it uses MLC NAND ... So longevity might be an issue depending on wear levelling and controller managment of reserve cells/space. I couldn't find any reviews. I had considered using an IDE SD card adaptor with a extreme pro or similar card using SLC flash... But it's slightly more expensive option and untested in this application afaik.

          • Unless you're deleting and reloading music every day I don't think cell endurance is really going to be an issue.
If the drive dies, just replace it...its not like it costs much.
Otherwise stick to the overpriced Hitachi spinning disk.

            • You're quite right, it's not like the data is frequently changing... So it should present an issue. I've just had to many SSDs fail spontaneously in the past so get paranoid. Can you pm me the 5238 url?

              • UPDATE:

I have updated the first post to include the link to the 523x firmware as I keep getting requests for it.
This is the usual 90/5/5 partition ratios with VIM, secret menu etc.
So if you are already running this partition scheme, your maps and music shouldn't be deleted.
As usual, have a copy of the maps DVD on hand should you need to reload it.

And the same warning still applies to older units with HW_radio version 003 or below: loading this newer firmware could permanently damage your radio board. If you really want to try and get RDS etc feel free to try, it does technically work.

As usual, any flash runs the risk of bricking the unit should something go wrong, so user accepts all responsibility.

                • Hey guys,

I may have missed it, but is there anyone in Canberra who has done\does the firmware updates for the RNS-510?

So grab the bottom edge and yank the surround off?

Why not bother also? Yes it's a factory fitted RNS510. Are they all very standardised a unit? The car is first of the B7s which were built for Australia... mine came from factory because I wanted certain options in it which standard stock packages didn't have.

Sorry, I read the first post again. I'm a bit lost, you've detailed 2 firmware variants. Which one should I be getting? 38xx or 525x?
Or am I supposed to be looking at this post and taking one of the 4020 downloads? Which version am I looking at?

After doing the firmware update, just download the v6.0 version of the maps and POI and burn them onto CDs for installation?

So basically it'd be me sitting in the car with 3 discs waiting for data to copy and install over one after another?

                    • So a big thanks to Sharkie for coding my van and support from Kamold in regards to firmware, I now have an RNS510 with 64GB SSD running 5238 and V7 maps everything works perfectly including VIM.
In regards to HDD failure as I mentioned earlier if you do replace the drive you just have to fold up the two tabs on the drive shell which then allows you to replace the drive just by removing the top cover from the radio.

I changed things up in the thread this morning just to confuse you
                        Just load 523x.
Then after its done you'll need to load up the map CD (v7 8035 is the latest) and the POI database via SDcard.

Cheers kamold. Thanks for the advice - makes the steps to do it much easier.

Just for my comfort though, can you give me some confidence around the use of the 523x firmware without pulling the unit out to confirm the revision of the RNS510 I have? It's a MY11 B7 and I had to wait for my order to come through from the factory.

As for the v7 8035, searching this thread, it's a purchase off JKU?

The POI download instructions comes off this thread?

                          • Unless you have a car from early 2009 or before, you will have a 'rev C' unit, and I will bet that you are currently running 2670 firmware (my Octavia is a MY11 and had this initially).
Therefor you can safely (with the usual caveat for any self-tampering) load 523x firmware.

                            Yes.

                            This post specifically.

                            • Just wanted to send kudos to kamold... Thanks for all your support and contributions. 5238 is working a charm in my unit, subjectively it feels more responsive and there are many small changes to menus, more than I've seen documented elsewhere.

Bit of a pain that the VW service centre isn't able to do the update of firmware for me when they have the car for servicing for the day. I'll get the firmware and POI data downloaded and organise a copy of the maps to come to me then. You've been a great help.
