Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled
After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.
Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before.
We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

Any Melbourne RNS510 owner willing to help Newbie with firmware/maps upgrade?
Hi All,
In reference to my first post:
A place for our new members to introduce themselves and their ride. Your first post MUST be in this section.
I was wondering if there is anyone in Melbourne who had successfully burned the firmware upgrade/maps upgrade CD, who would allow me to pop over to their house and carry out the same exercise on my 2009 car?
My manufacturing date was Aug 2008, and I can't access the secret menu. However my DVD stops when driving and I can't access SDHC cards, so I assume is original. There is v2 maps DVD in the glovebox, so I also assume that is what the maps are on.
I tried to download and burn the 3970 firmware upgrade which would normally apply to this year of car, but my unit gives me a read error. I'm sure I could keep trying but posting this request seems like a simpler way of doing it, and also the chance to meet another owner.
I have only recently been in Dan Murphy's so I'm bound to be able to supply the alcoholic supplement of your choice!
Thanks in advance

Try different disc types (CD-R, DVD-R, DVD+R) or different brands if you have access to them. Firmware upgrades can be a bit finicky about this. Just remember not to flatten your battery with too many attempts in a row too

Thanks Hillbilly and Ryan_R - I appreciate your responses.
I have tried twice with DVD-R (using TDK media), used IMGBRN (on 2x) as well as the Windows proprietary system, with no luck. I'm sure I could keep going, but it seems much more sensible/quicker to find someone who has done a successful burn and borrow the disc that they used.
Thankfully we have moved beyond using CDs/DVDs to do upgrades now - it feels like 2004 all over again - which was probably when the original RNS510 system was conceived!

A quick note of thanks to Buckets - I dropped around to his place on Friday and the upgrade went perfectly!
I do have to do a bit of research now to work out why I can't get my SD card reader working or my ipod socket, however I suspect I'll be able to troubleshoot those with a bit more research.
Some interesting changes (I'm sure the experienced posters will know these) but the Optical parking sensor info now appears on the same screen as the reversing camera info, and some obvious improvements to the navigation information.
Thanks again Buckets - and nice to meet another forum colleague!

Firmware update Failed
Hi All,
I am new with RNS510, follow this tread I downloaded the firmware for my RNS510 D version thinking to update from 3970 to 4120. I have burned the DVD using imageburn with 2x speed. When i inserted the DVD into the unit, the system rebooted. It showed a navigation start up screen with two red stripes on top and bottom, then it did nothing. When i tried to press on power button, it kind of restarted and stuck with a white screen. I now cannot do anything with the unit as it constantly stayed on the white screen. A quick google suggested that I have bricked my RNS510. I have tried all the reset function, reboot function without any success. Tried to disconnect the unit from power for more than 1 hour and tried again, same white screen. Can anyone please help and advise if i have totally damaged my RNS510? Can it be fixed? Any help would be much appreciated.
Many thanks in advance.

Doesn't sound too good.
You'd have to take the DVD drive out and remove the disk, put in the recovery CD and then try to resurrect it.2011 Skoda Octavia vRS TDI DSG wagon|Revo Stage 1|Race Blue|Leather|Dynamic Xenons w 6000K|9w7 BT|THA475 Amp+active sub|Whiteline ALK|RVC|

I put the disc in correctly. Somehow during the process, i think the process just stopped. I pressed eject disc and i think also Setup+Eject+*, then this happen. I now don't know what to do. Will try to manually remove the disc and try the recovery CD.2013 Jetta TSI Highline, Sunroof, Bi Xenon, GTI Pedals, Eibach (To be Installed)
