Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

I can confirm that dealer will replace battery under warranty if it's not holding charge.

Into my 3rd year and just had mine replaced.

Would be a good issue to raise for anyone coming into your last year of warranty.

Press that and it will go to black and white screen and will tell you on one line

SW version XXXX Thats the Firmware

Further down it will say MAP version XXXX

          Now you know

You can only update so far in the Firmware on that unit as per the Sticky but can update to the latest map

          My RNS510 says
          Part No 3T0 035 680 G
          HW H07
          SW - 5128
          Map version DVD 7920

I dont have any further information in the version information option.

The question I have is, I would like to FW update and add VIM. I would also like to activate TV and I have heard I can also get DAB or DAB+?

Should I be looking at VCDS changes for these options? I dont want to downgrade the FW to get VIM, but I am more interested in DVB TV anyway, even if only when stopped.

I have voice control of Nav, female and male voice guidance, speed advisory, (although it says 120km/h between the Westgate bridge and the Ring road in Melbourne, and that is definitely 100km/h with 2 x fixed speed cameras). I have the original V5 DVD of the maps, but got a V6 version of maps recently.

I cant interrogate with VCDS right now as I need a new cable with CAN-BUS. This is on its way though.

Well Kamold will confirm or deny this but according to the threads There is NO RNS510 that can get either DAB or TV

This is because it doesnt have either a TV tuner or a Dab radio board as well as Aussie using Dab+ which is different to other parts of the world Read post 254 and onward about this and page 24 here

Get VIM on its own here which of course is illegal in Australia if the driver can see it .

BY the look of yours it is fully updated anyway Most of us only use 4120. The facilities in the Nav are in the hardware or firmware and dont think a cable will do much I could of course be wrong

There is currently no DAB tuner capable board in an RNS510 available for Australia. This may (likely may not) change. My guess is that VW Au will simply wait for the new unit to be released with the Mk7 Golf to support this feature and leave the rest of us behind.

Yes you can enable VIM by loading the Berto-VIM or similar firmware hack CD.
In order to add DVB-T you will need to add a third-party external interface such as this. I have not used this or any other such interface personally.

As Hillbilly mentioned we use slightly different versions of the DAB protocol set (DAB+) so you would need to check with the manufacturer of any media add-on to validate if their receiver supports DAB+ stations. In most cases its a firmware update that is all that differentiates being able to receive the DAB+ stations however best to confirm prior to purchasing.

There were multiple potential products set to hit the AU market towards the beginning of LAST year to bring an external DAB+ interface to VW head units however the all appear to have disappeared....not sure what that means

The easier option it would seem these days is to stream audio from your internet radio source of choice (eg Pandora, Rdio etc) to your headunit over A2DP to your Bluetooth unit.

              • Thankyou, kamold and hillbilly. Guess that ends dimple DVB on the rns without an external tuner.

I must sppologise about the 120km speed advisory. I was halfway through the update from v5 to v6 maps. V5 has speed advisory at 120km, v6 seems to be much better.

                • Hi,
I tried to check the firmware version of my RNS510, but after pressing the Setup button and holding it only the FM and AM buttons came up in the service menu, no version button.
Does it mean I have a very old firmware, right? Which fw version would be safe for me?

needs to be enabled thru 'tweaking' of your SatNav module (either #37 or #56), and to do this, you need a VCDS cable (Ross-Tech). Put a call out to see if someone in your area can drop by, or you see them, to enable the "Secret Menu" (takes no more than 5 minutes).

                              • I am on fw version 2720. I have downloaded both the 3810 and 4120. I am thinking of upgrading to 4120. Seems that 3810 will do a repartition to create 2 partitions but 4120 installs on the one partition (the same as 2720). Does anyone know is the RNS 510 needs to be recoded after 4120 upgrade?
