Being from the old school ,I'm afraid I'm not game to do the upgrade to the personal POI,
butI'mm quite prepared to send a SD card to some one who would be prepared to load them and the latter firmware
i would pay all postage costs ,??

afraid the firmware upgrade is done on the unit itself with a cd

anyone know how long the maps take to install...the firmware upgrade was done without a hitch but when trying to install the maps the progress bar will go through to the end and then start again. It's been doing this every time. When trying to eject the cd, the unit says it's downloading the map.

Is there something wrong with the map or am I right in thinking it takes a while to install? (The NAV and the POIs are still fully functioning, its just the NAV is reading off the CD)

Shouldn't take more than about 15 mins.
Maybe try burning the map DVD again. Make sure you use the slowest available speed on the burner. Use a different brand disk if you have one available.

Not sure exactly whether this helps or not!

But after installing the map, you may experience a long period where you have a blank white screen as a map.

                This is perfectly normal!

Depending on which unit you have and whether you've imported a large custom POI db3 file via SD card, it can take a couple of hours and even overnight, before the map to actually show up properly.

Just need to be patient with it and allow it time to digest all the POI entries.

                MY TIP:

If you can view, select or search any custom POIs after importing, then I think it's both a successful map & custom POI install.

I have always loaded my maps from a CD rather than a DVD. As mentioned before its a burning issue. Imgburn seems to work best. guys having trouble should try reburning to CD. Remember the vol name MUST be correct. It will be if burning from an ISO file.

Also you need to remember that the RNS510 is not a very smart unit. Its not good at multitasking. I would do the firmware/maps/poi as very separate three step process.
                    1. Update the firmware and ensure all the other functions are working. Radio, playing Musing etc.
                    2. Load the Maps, and all ow time for the unit to lock on to your location. This can take ages just itself. it needs to find its location on the globe the first time and that involves heaps of calculations. Mobile phones are quick at this because they use the mobile tower codes to assist in getting the initial location.
                    3. Finally the POI update.

for those on Mac, I have always found the inbuilt Disk Utility works great, just open the iso, and then click burn

                        Hi guys,

Im really keen to do the customized POI's. I have retrofitted the RNS unit myself, so I do not have a map disk.

Any idea of the best place to get a copy?

                        I have found this place,

VW Navigation Disc Australia & New Zealand V4.1 2011. with POI's $100, free shipping

Not sure if anyone else has something different.

I have also been told that upgrading the F/W on my C unit to 3xxx will delete voice control for good.

Not sure on the above, as I dont think I have it anyway.

                        Cheers

4.1 is the latest available map from VW, it is the one we are using that works with firmware 3xxx and custom POIs via SDCard upload.
Haven't heard that voice control doesn't work with 3xxx firmware, it works OK on mine still (though still doesn't allow you enter destinations via voice which is annoying. Worked on my RNS-E in my A3 which is an older inferior unit in a lot of ways).

excellent work, thanks, upgraded my C nit with the custom POI's supplied. I haven't tested if my Video in motion has now been disbled though.... with regards to the custom POI's i'm really interested in just the speed camera locations and school zones. Did you mention that the data for your POI's school zones only covers NSW & SA? I live in WA and would love to be able to find a way to have all the new speed camera's updated (loads of new ones have been installed here) I wish I could update the multinova locations but I reckon i'm dreaming on that one....Thanks for all the hard work guys

My cameras should be nationwide, but probably 4 month's old.

School zones are only NSW & ACT.
