    • Voice input for destination selection SEEMs to work now!

Before it used to just say 'voice input not supported' or something. Now it asks for you to spell the town, or say it. Seems to work fairly well if you speak like a robot.

Also to say the suburb, you say for example 'botany, Sydney'.

Very pleased that this function finally works

      • I presume you already had voice control enabled (I've got mine turned off so I can pause media via the steering wheel button)

            • just thought I would mention that the speed limit display is really, really bad, seems to be wrong about 1/4 of the time, also apparently the Eastern Freeway (Melbourne) is 120km/h, how did they get it so wrong?

              • Could it be possible that it's the unit that's getting it wrong.

Or maybe CD_7703 fixes this problem.

                • I doubt it can be software related. The rns510 is simply displaying the data from the map info. Which is why it's right most of the time.
I would blame sensis for that part however vw are selling the product so are ultimately responsible for validating that it works at least in most cases. You can't expect them to drive every road in aus and report inaccuracies however there appear to be some pretty major ones ie speed limit is not 120 anywhere outside of the nt as far as I am aware.

                  • maybe sensis knows something we don't.........
maybe in the next 1-2yrs time, before the next map update comes out, the govt is going to raise the speed limit to 120km/h!!!!
so atleast the maps will be 'up-to-date'....for once!!!!

Maybe the extra 10km/h is deliberate by VW... to correct their fcuken speedos.

                          • omg reading all of the stickies & threads on RNS 510 is making my head spin. First off though... good on you Andych... I'm downloading v5 right now.

However, the big question for me is whether to upgrade my Version C firmware 2720 to the latest firmware when I install the new v5 map? Is there a big risk in bricking my unit? The "RNS510 Firmware Upgrade to Version 3810 Anyone?" thread and "RNS Firmware upgrade to 3xxx" suggest there might be.

                            Options seem to be
                            1. remain on same firmware, but update the partition & maps
                            2. leave the partition & just update the darn maps
                            3. update the whole lot.

I may go for option 2 just to get the new maps (and check it's working), then update firmware & partition later on.

Reckon this is a good course of action? Did I fail to consider anything in this approach? Thoughts?

Thx to Johnc and kamold for the write ups as well on the fw updates & how to disassemble the RNS510.

                            • I'm on a C unit, and upgraded my firmware to 3970. No problems. And then upgraded maps to v5. As with any firmware upgrade, there is always the possibility of something going wrong and ending up with a bricked unit, but the chances are slim. Just follow the instructions carefully and you should be ok.

                              • Shouldn't be a problem, so long as you are absolutely sure you have a C unit.

From experience, C unit is just a tad slower running under FW 3XXX, when compared to FW 2XXX.
