The Bluetooth volume by default is set very low from memory. Try going into setup->media and set bluetooth volume to medium or high (I think you have to already have the phone paired and Bluetooth streaming playing)2011 Skoda Octavia vRS TDI DSG wagon|Revo Stage 1|Race Blue|Leather|Dynamic Xenons w 6000K|9w7 BT|THA475 Amp+active sub|Whiteline ALK|RVC|

Firstly, I assume the iphone is paired with the RNS-510?
Here is a demo of the steps..
Volkswagen RDC-510: Bluetooth Audio Streaming - YouTube
When the phone is paired and you start up ipod, there is like an arrow sort of icon down the bottom (don't have a bluetooth device with me so can't pair my phone to look at it and describe it better). You click on this and it allows you to select where you want to route the audio...2011 Skoda Octavia vRS TDI DSG wagon|Revo Stage 1|Race Blue|Leather|Dynamic Xenons w 6000K|9w7 BT|THA475 Amp+active sub|Whiteline ALK|RVC|

And yep i knew this because it worked on the other firmware hahaha.
it comes up with the option to play, pause, skip under media.
pressing play does make the song play on the phone and pause likewise.
The audio routing is set to the rns and not iphone, but there is no sound.

So, without VAGCOM (?) cable or experience in anything electronic at all (!) how do I find out what version of firmware and or map I have?WHITE 118FSI DSG MY12 Sports Pack with RNS510 Sat Nav - PICKUP Oct 17, 2011. Added Chrome bootlid spear-very nice, Golf doorsill protectors-not so nice and Aluminium Pedal set-EXTREMELY nice!

You could install one of the upgrades listed here which allows you to access a hidden menu by holding the Setup button for about 10 seconds, which can reveal your firmware.

Probably.
Will they ask you to pay for it?
Probably.
