Correct. I have done this downgrade before and as mentioned it will automagically repartition the hdd to 2 partitions.

Yep. Sure does. (as long as the hardware does. Needs to be HW version 04 or above I believe)

The icons and displays are generally nicer on the newer FW.

But at least you will have working POIs! Which I will assume that's why you want to downgrade?

I will also assume you have your 3800 FW disk, if you want to revert back?

Going to do the downgrade today, my unit is version D, and hw50, is that still okay :S

Yep you can go ahead with the downgrade. All supported.

Used the recovery cd, turned on downgrade, then used the 2760_all image first bar got to 100%, then AAPL got to 10% and i got error" 010302".
Not sure what to do now

Most likely can't read the cd.
Try another disk (or even a DVD) and make sure you burn at slowest speed possible.

Tried again with another DVD, and redownloaded firmware from mygti, same error, this time at 5% AAPL update

They can be a bit temperamental with some brands of media however I have not had any problems with mine even with really crap cdrs.
Try a different brand cdr or use another drive to burn the cd image. If it still fails try posting on vwnavi forums as those guys are the gurus.

Yay, used a different burner and it worked, only thing is it asked for maps cd, inserted the dvd i made from the maps iso, and then it said sucess, pressed eject but when i press maps its just blank :S

you have to leave the map dvd in for like half an hour or so. Takes a while to copy. Select nav, then when you press eject it should prompt you that its not loaded yet...
