    *searches Google*

See the bottom two coloured blocks:

The purple one is for MDI/3.5mm audio in (I think). Search for an MDI retrofit guide as well for more details.
hmm ok, it sounds complicated but hopefully it will be obvious enough when i go to installing it.
what did you mean when you said you had to change the order of them?
do they not go to the original pin outs?
btw my MDI came standard in the car if that makes a difference

thanks for your help so far Ryan_R!

    • iPhone 4 doesn't have rsap, so no added benefit by going to 9WZ, even if your phone does support rsap, it disables the phone forcing you to use the RNS even if you don't want to, though you do get better signal (rsap phones only)

      • I'm going from memory, but your MDI will just be that purple block. You will unplug the whole quad-lock connector from the RNS 510 and connect it to the piggyback adapter that comes with the bluetooth, then that adapter connects to the RNS510.

You might find, however, that the new adapter in the middle doesn't have wires for the purple bit to plug into, whic is why you have to pull it out and plug it into the other end of the adapter that connects directly into the RNS510.

So it might be something like:

        --------------|---------------|RNS510
        --------------|---------------|RNS510
        --------------|***nothing**|RNS510

Imagine those lines are group of wires, the first section being the original cable, second is the adapter, 3rd is the RNS. Most wires connect fine, but the MDI might not since the adapter doesn't include them). This was a problem because I had the purple connector for the 3.5m AUX jack, then I wanted to retrofit the MDI (also worth noting that my AUX jack didn't work after the MDI retrofit anyway). Since yours is factory fitted you'll probably be fine anyway. I don't mind admitting my MDI retrofit was a bit of a bodge job (the unit is sitting under my seat, with the connector resting between my seat and the centre console), but I got the functionality that I wanted.

ahh okok that makes sense. basically the adaptor harness that the BT unit ships with doesnt have the connectors for the MDI/AUX pins to pass through back to the headunit (RCD510 in my case but would prob be the same as what you outlined above)

ill purchase it from bluewagen and make a note that i have AUX/MDI etc so hopefully they will have some sort of way to make sure its all good

you've been of great help, much appreciated

u can turn off the feature (remote sim - rsap) on your mobile.

i've got the 9wz. my missus has a nokia, and it has an option under bluetooth settings to enable remote sim. she has it enabled. when she connects to the car's bt, the car takes over. if this was disabled on her phone, the car would not take over.
i have an iphone. since it doesn't support the remote sim (rsap protocol), the standard hands free protocol (hfp) is used.

            the 9wz works both ways.

guess if u can't turn remote sim feature off on the phone, then u might have an issue.
however, i think there r settings (somewhere) in the 9wz that can b changed (via mfd) so it doesn't take over.

                • -5K0 035 730 Bluetooth VW RNS 510 9W7 UHV AD2P / 5K0 035 730 D,E,F!!! 2012!!! newer than 7P6! | eBay

I just installed this 9W7 2012 unit in my Golf R and works perfectly with my Iphone 4.

It was a bit of a fiddly install but didnt have to cut any wires - it is plug and play.

Only issue - I was not sure about my voice control function in the car - it is fitted as a standard feature on the Golf R.

The bluetooth kit included another mic, so I wasnt sure if I needed to install 2 mic's or not (both had the same VW part number)?? There is only space for 1 mic in the overhead console.

Anyway I just kept the original mic installed in the car and plugged it into the new wiring for the bluetooth. I was concerned that if I did this the voice control function would not work.

After testing both the bluetooth & voice control work perfectly off the one mic plugged into the bluetooth wiring. Not sure how this still works, but it does.

PS - I will have my Rosstech VCDS cable up for sale soon if anyone is interested.

i purchased a bt harness from bluewagen 2 weeks ago that already has the 12-pin aux/mdi connector. so no need to transfer any mdi plugs between quadlock connectors.

i've got the ebay link at home. will post it when i get home.

                          • I was randomly looking through VCDS in my car the other day and noticed an option that was ticked in my car, but perhaps isn't ticked in Bennobee's, causing his MFI issues (perhaps)

Note the last option (Bit 7). (The tickboxes disappear when I press Alt+PrntScrn). You can find that screen via 56 - Radio - Long Coding Helper - Byte 7.

Also try unticking it if it's already ticked, mine was ticked by default, and i had to untick it to have nav in my mfd.

                              • OK, having read through 43 pages of this over the last few days, I am unclear on what I need to do in terms of Bluetooth
I wouldn't bother with bluetooth unless it was going to provide me with A2DP music streaming, so seems that requires the 9w7, however I have an 07 MkV GTi with RCD510 and the lowline (half height) MFD. So I am never going to get phone on the MFD.
So my question is: can I use the 9w7 (which version) bluetooth and get the bluetooth (and A2DP) working and have control from the HU, or will these units just "not work" with the Red MFD's.
If people can not answer the question, I might just go ahead and order one and find out.
