i never intended on disconnecting the power from the battery.
however, removing the quadlock connector from the back of the rns headunit "disconnects" it from its power source (aka the battery). hence the question about the loss of power to the headunit.

was ur rns factory installed? weird how it askes u, then it goes away when ignition is on!!

    • Well after a week of playing with the Unit i have now got it working fully through to touch screen. Nothing on the steering wheel with the white MFD works but i got a fellow Vw'er who is going to help me try the coding issue through vag-com. If nothing else it works and works well everone can hear and talk in the car now to get the steering column buttons working.

      • Does anyone know where the 729 can be bought these days?
And if i have a 9W7 installed, can i simply pull out the box and replace with the 729?
        Thanks

        • the radio/nav units recognises the car one at a time
so after it loses battery, if its memory is gone, and you switch it back on, it won't know what car it's in.
when you turn the ignition on, the CAN Gateway wakes up and the radio will see the car's info through it
that's how I understand it to work
I just installed my first 9W7, done some 729D/729Bs in the past, and this is an awesome unit!!

I mean i can make calls and pair the thing and it works like a charm and i have the address book workinmg. I cant answer or hang up via the phone icon in the R36 nor can i use the arrow keys to move (or the OK key to select). They told me they dont have VAG-COM so any suggestions.

They promised me they did all the coding required already but thats not the case.
            Funny I just saw this!

I installed my 9W7 kit that I had previously fitted in my 2007 MKV GTI into my 'new' 2009 VW Passat R36.
When I had the 9W7 in the GTI, I could access and use the kit fine via the RNS510, but could never view and utilise phone functions via the red MFD (which I knew wasn't going to work) but I also couldn't answer a call via the 'phone' button on the steering wheel which incidentally is the same wheel in my '09 R36.

Difference is, the R36 has the full height white MFD, which the 9W7 is guaranteed to work with and I should be able to scroll through and view my telephone book/call lists etc via this screen but there isn't even a 'phone' menu in the MFD, NOR can I answer or hang up a call via the 'Phone' button on the steering wheel.
It has me stumped, because I was sure once I had a white MFD i'd be able to see the phone/menu's etc, but to no avail.

So nobody knows if there is anything in VCDS to enable the phone function on the white MFD/steering wheel buttons?
I've tracked down a HEX-CAN-USB Vagcom that i'll hopefully have next week, so i'll be doing some serious investigation to try and enable this feature as it should work by default i'd imagine?

            • If there's no phone menu in the MFD, it's because you haven't enabled it in VCDS. One tickbox should do the trick, the question will then be if works 100% or will you end up in bennobee's situation.

              See here for details:

              • Hi all,

just about to bite the bullet and get one now, but just for a quick confirmation what's the difference between:

                -3C8 035 730 Bluetooth VW RNS 510 9WZ Premium 2011-2012 !!! 3C8 035 730 B | eBay

                i have the rcd510 + MDI in a 2010 Jetta and i use an iphone 4

worth it to pay the difference and get the 3c8?

                thanks!

                • 9WZ has an extra antenna that you have to install, as it disables your phones 3G signal and uses the car antenaa instead. If your phone supports RSAP (not many do), you can send text messages via the head unit and a few other things.

If I had to choose one I'd go for the 9W7, as it is supported by more phones, would be slightly easier to install, and plus I want to keep my phone's 3G enabled for Internet use (i.e. map searches, email alerts, etc). SMS would be nice but I don't think I'd use it all that much (would be quicker to pull over and type on my phone than on the RNS).

Only 9WZ disables it, not sure if you can turn that 'feature' off.

lol alright then. also i noticed you have MDI, so how does that interact with the BT module?
Do i need to do anything different or modify the cable?

                          • I retrofitted the MDI after I did the bluetooth, so I did have to change the order of the piggyback cables, but can't remember the details. I think I pulled one or two sections out of one adapter and stuck them in the other since there were no cables for those sections to join them up.

so you had to manually splice the cables together at where they are supposed to match up?

                              • No splicing or soldering

The quad-lock connector has 2 'blocks' of wires in it, I just had to pull the block out of one of them and stick it in the other quadlock connector.

                                *searches Google*

See the bottom two coloured blocks:

The purple one is for MDI/3.5mm audio in (I think). Search for an MDI retrofit guide as well for more details.
