Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

  • I couldn't visualize the improvement when it comes to hp, kw, or Nm.

If someone tells me that it's 0.5s faster, I can visualize it.

That's why I like in-gear times. Takes the numpty out of the start & the gear changes. No tyre spin or traction issues. Less abusive on the vehicle. More like the way most people drive.

The best (believable) Golf R DSG 0-100 I've read is 5.3. A number of members (with reliable, relatively accurate equipment) have achieved high 4s (~4.8-4.9) with a stage 1 flash. A few users have claimed much faster times (eg mid 4s), however I'd be inclined to disregard these as either recorded with inaccurate timing equipment, or else influenced by other factors. Fab_R achieved a reputable mid 4-s with a stage 2 flash and several hardware mods.

Your experience may vary - dramatically. But 0.4 - 0.5 seconds would probably be a fair and reasonable target to aim for. At this end of the performance spectrum, a half second is a lot of extra go.

        • By the way, any problem with the car overheating at Stage 1 because there is no modification to other parts of the car?

It's like overclocking a computer and not giving it more cooling.

          • No not really, but that is a good analogy. Think of a Stage 1 upgrade as say, overclocking a Pentium 4 chip by 20%, which is quite achievable on the standard cooling. A Stage 2+ upgrade on the other hand is like overclocking a Pentium 4 chip by 30% and increasing the voltage, thus necessitating better cooling, downpipe, etc. =)

            • For Golf R Stage 1 tunes, are they done without dyno? I mean, just drive to the workshop, hook up the computer, flash the ECU and that's all?

                • Hi, can anyone tell me the difference in terms of Stage 1 and 2 based on your bum dyno?

I know those kW and Nm numbers but I can't imagine or put them into perspective.

They said stock to Stage 1 is a huge jump. Car feels totally different.

How about Stage 1 to Stage 2 (only changing the down pipe high cat flow and cold air intake)?

                  Many thanks in advance!

                  • Got the APR Stage 1 done today. Once engine was warm, put a bit of gas and had heaps of wheel spin!

Once on the highway, mid range grunt was unreal. Feels like a small V8. Pulls as hard in gear as my brother in laws BMW 335i. Will test more tonight in cool weather (32 degree weather outside now not ideal for turbo)

                    • APR ROCKS!!!!!!

Would be awesome if you could drag with a GIAC GTI and see what the outcome is

If I had to tune my R again, I would've gone GIAC and use the extra cash to get myself a proper pod CAI.

                        • so just went out tonight to really see how good the apr stage 1 was and my word, sooooo much extra torque. even at low speeds, it pulls so hard. feels so much difference to the std setting. feels like a 5 sec car now

i hope the factory internals and dsg can cope with the extra boost on tap.......

You've been threatening to do this, you won't regret it. I've had APR tune, exhaust and CAI for more than 20k now and no probs with DSG.

                            • I am thinking to do stage one on my GTI, but before purchasing it i would definitely want to do a trail first. But according to the previous post, someone says it seems ECU back to a lower stage than the stock when finish the trail, is that true?

also can anyone recommend someone doing stage one in Sydney south west? and roughly how much it will be?

Yes, that could be true, there are five leprechauns installed that magically, slowly eat away at memory, eventually they consume the entire vehicle leaving only a small oil stain in your driveway
