What a awesome weekend away it was at vits in Albury great people and a fantastic line up of cars.
Taking out best mk1 was a surprise to be honest as there was some real nice contenders like Alex's red mk1 gti on zender sports.
A big thanks to George who saved the day on the way home who drove back 230km as the 1.6 gave up the ghost just before Benalla and helped with the recovery.

Back on the hwy I couldn't make it over 70km with my foot to floor. at this stage something in that motor wanted out making a racket. About 5km later a cloud of white smoke was bucketing from the exhaust (sorry to whoever was behind me) and the motor cut out completely.
George then drove me home picked up the trailer drove back to pick her up. Massive thanks to him, he even helped me with the recovery.
As some guys know I always had the intention to do a engine swap but not in this circumstance. So time to get cracking and put all my bits together and begin.

Ahhhhh, having to be rescued by mates with a trailer, brings back so many memories.
Congrats on getting 1st place, well deserved in my opinion and on getting back home (eventually). Great to hear that George helped out so much. I bet you don't get that with modern car owners.
What are you looking at to replace the 1.6?1978 MK1 2.0 16v http://www.vwwatercooled.com.au/foru...-46488-70.html

1.8 is a nice step up from the 1.6. Intersections that you used to change down into 2nd can be taken in 3rd and hills don't affect the car.
2.0 is much more fun though. A big improvement in performance and it's still pretty easy to fit into the MK1. The 2.0 in my MK2 has a 2.0 bottom end with the original MK2 GTI head and it's really fun to drive. Not so powerful that it attracts Police attention but quick enough to overtake without worrying about oncoming traffic.
Cheers
