Yeah if you go 1.8, a bit higher compression ratio is really nice. All the 2.0l engines have reasonable compression ratios anyway because they are from the 90's, but some of the 1.8's aren't that peppy.

Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled
After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.
Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before.
We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

it's only bolted up to the car ATM, needs fuel system done, cooling, wiring and the list goes on.
But a fun little project.

Hopefully in the next coupe of weeks i can at least get it running. Because of the complete engine and 02j conversion I've got a few miner set backs on the gearbox side that's obviously not a direct fit like speedo, clutch cable and reverse switch.

After the gearbox, what else is needed? Surely you can just wire up to the reverse switch with your existing wires.77 Mk1 GLS 2 door - That sinking feeling

It is just that simple Jordan.
But 02j gearboxes usually run a hydraulic clutch slave and Due to the fact it's going in a mk1 I don't really want to stuff around converting the car to suit this set up....only just for now.
I will be using a a cable operated one that's from a seat. Doing this doesn't allow me to run a reverse switch at all. So I'm going to try and come up with something to fit.
I also need to run the cable operated shifter which I excited about.
Basically in a nut shell I just would like to get everything working the way it should before I start diving, because I know I'll leave it on the back burner.
