Haha, just realised the fibreglass bonnet was cast off a swallow tail.
I've got a swallow tail, fibreglass bonnet. I reckon I can safely say it'll be the only one in Australia.
Just cleaning up around the car today so I can get stuck back into the body work.79 MK1 Golf Wreck to Race / 79 MK1 Golf The Red Thread / 76 MK1 Golf Kamei Race Car

Got stuck into the seat mounting today.
The design is based on information I got from the cage builder, Brown Davis.
It's a simple H pattern made from 25mm x 25mm RHS steel, 2mm thick and 350mpa.
To retain tube strength threded inserts are welded into the tubes to take the seat brackets.
1.6mm thick steel reinforcing plates are required to spread the load over the thin panel steel.
The floor isn't very strong and not a great place to mount stuff off, so 2 bars span the floor half attaching to the tunnel in the centre and the sill on the outer.
2 members run front to back between the spanning members, these should be a long as possible for the most leverage on the seat.
I'm going to use the seat I already have from my other car, but it's base mounting so I had to get side mounting adaptors as well as the side mounts to make it all work.
Had to throw a couple of interior items in to work on positioning everything in the cabin.
Crash hat was also used to check headroom.

I had to buy a whole sheet of 1.6mm, I'll find a use for it eventually.
Plasma cutter made short work of cutting out the plates.
Next was shaping the plates and laying out the tubes.

Profiling the ends of the tube to match the contour of the body was a complete pain in the rear.
Bending the plates was easier.
just a quick check while it's just tacked together.
"H" fully welded and the tacked to plates.
"H" and plates getting fully welded to each other.

I made the threaded inserts from 20mm round bar.
Step 1
Steps 2 and 3
Only drilled at this stage I tapped them after welding.

Cleaned up for welding
Undercoated frame before welding it in.
Guess I'm stuck with it now!
Side brackets trial fitted.
And seat bolted in.

All of that took the entire day.
Seat mounting is not one of my favourite jobs.

Nice work, Pete.
I don't enjoy mounting seats, either. My Uncle has also been not enjoying making seat mounts in his Porsche 914/6 GT.. It's just a PITA job..
