Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

  • So....
    Installed a HPA mount.
Had the CTS turbo Dog bone insert, which had snapped the front off!
Zero wheel hop, now it just spins the wheels lol
    A lot stiffer front end.
The car vibrates a lot more at idle (750rpm) but I bumped up the idle to 800 via the OBDeleven and seems ok now

There is a great review on the link below

    • So a lots happened in the last few months.
The HPA Puck was part of a bad batch and fell apart with in a few weeks, so got a replacement with was a Mark 6 version. Which means its solid with out the 3 holes at the back. Only been in a week or so, but hopefully it lasts longer than the 1st one...

Now to turn up the Map6 on the JB4 and run it for a few months.
Once tuned nicely, Ill drop it on the dyno and see what sort of power it can make!
Hopefully its around the 210/220 kw at the wheels!!

        • Today the post man delivered something that I didn't really need, make it does make the engine bay look more stock and cleaner.

          VW Part number: 5Q0129849
Which is the trim behind the drivers side air intake behind the grill.
I had Duct tape there and worked fine, but a little look and you can tell something is up. Now it looks stock because it is...

          • So after installing all the parts above, Im now working on a Map 6 (full custom).
Which has been perfect timing, as the JB4 has new Firmware. Which the first drive around the block, has fixed the part throttle issues.

Stay "tuned" for Map 6 updates!

I think those flaps have two functions.... when travelling at speed the flaps open allowing air to flow over more of the radiator.
When stopped and the fans working they close And stop hot air recirculating from the hot engine compartment backthrough the radiator core. I would put them back in.

Totally agree with how they work, and Yes they will go back in, just when I have the floor off again to put the bottom ones back on.
Im more interested in making something so all the air goes to the RaD from the front. Need to go see a Plastic welder. I also want to make up some ducts for the brakes too.

                  • So Dyno results!
Take note, I was never going for a number, and all map 6 boost curves were made to save the stock clutch.
See how Map 1 & 2 have more power from 0-3000 rpm, that's the clutch killer

                    Stock: 160.2kW (was 153.5kW)
                    Map 1: 183.1kW (was 170.1kW)
                    Map 2: 185.8kW (was 176.7kW)

I've put Run 23 in the car.
                    Run 23 – 20psi at 4000 – 193kW
Which seems to have a low torque down low and when you want to open it up has good power.

If I was going for a high torque boost curve, It would look similar or even better to map 2.

Not a lot planned now, Maybe a Oil catch can for track days, and replace the stock tyres (I have a set of p zeros ready)

                    • Skoda Friday, RS3 Brake Ducts...

Ordered some Audi RS3 Brake Ducts via a group buy via Facebook page 'SkodaModderz'.

                      Part numbers:
                      8V0407811
                      8V0407812

Not sure if they will help on track, but they can't hurt...

Busted a clip, so just be careful and make sure the duct will clear the wheel arch.
Photos weren't final install as it felt it was to close to the wheel arch.

                      • Burger Motorsport Oil Catch Can on the way.
There is a Groupbuy going on the SkodaModderz Facebook page if you are interested.

Also, I drove the car to dinner last night and I have a slipping clutch between 2500-3000 rpm.
Reading lots about clutches now, But will most likely go with the Harding Performance SMF Kit (they can install too)

But if you have upgraded Clutch, I would love the feedback.

                        • While I had some time, I installed some New fog light bulbs.
Should of researched a lot more but they were cheap on Black Friday.

The new lights are not as yellow as stock, but compared to the Headlights, they are still yellow.
Might see what other options are around but don't want to spend the earth on lights that hardly get used.

                            • BMS Oil Catch Can Install.
Very nice piece of kit and very good value. It doesn't look out of place in the in engine bay as its black.

Install was fine once I had talked to Luke at Auto Instruct about cutting the hoses to the right length, Seems that the LHD cars are a little different.

Key notes would be, File the Dowel hole to make it a nice fit and cut hoses to length. Also cable tie the o2 wires before you attach the Can. I also added some cable ties to the hoses, but you don't have to do that.

Ill check in once a week and let you know what comes out!
