  • So I tried another octavia rs with the sports button this time, I like it. Last time I drove the octavia I gave it a hard time and didn't have a lot of time in it. This time I slowed it down, took it on the freeway, around the streets I usually drive on to get a reference to all the bumps etc. The skoda made me laugh again as it's a fun car, really like the dsg gearbox and power delivery. My ears kept trying to equalise, and after a while I began to feel nauseated. I opened the window all the way and this helped. It was like the cabin was pressurised....weird. Overall it's a great fun car, but not sure why it made me feel so odd, as I was fine soon as the window opened.

    • See Briskoda huge thread on booming cabin acoustics. Problem has not really been nailed down so far.

Gotta give the new RS at least 7500kms before you really floor it, specially on a track... So I'll hold off but might have a couple sprints for the lights but not too hard!

        • I'm thrilled seeing all these excited kids waiting for their toys! Can't wait to read all your reviews.

The cabin 'Boom' seems to be something that is widely reported in the UK and German forums with different people recommending multiple solutions with varying levels of success. I remember that I didn't notice this at all when I test drove a DSG hatch. Will be interesting to see how this pans out here.

          • Have my Octavia for a week now, whilst there was a pressure build up in the 103 TSI elegance wagon that I test drove, my ambition plus wagon is quiet with no boom or pressure build up at all.

            • I tried the bmw 328i straight after it, and it was awesome, fantastic actually, everything you would need in an everyday car. Only 1 but...it was almost 20k more. So I'm going to try the bmw320diesel with all the added gizmos which will be around 50k which is slightly more but close to the specked up rs. Also as I really really like the rs, I'm going to go and try another one just to make sure it wasn't me, or the one off car that made me feel like it did when I drove it. I've now read up on the briskoda site and you guys are right, it is a common listed experience in regards to the boom and also people feeling nauseated, more so the boom. Man I really hope the next one I try doesn't as I want the skoda. Makes me smile when I drive it.

Just a suggestion, what about the run out Merc C Class?

i definitely considered this, I'm not sure if your are referring to the c250? If so it's roughly the same price as the 320d, they both do 0-100 in 7.4 seconds, the diesel does 4.5lt/100km vs 6.8lt/100km which is a savings of about $800 a year in fuel, keeping it for 6years, I get 4 years free servicing with bmw as corporate deal, basically over the term of ownership I save around 9k. But most importantly the 328i I drove has the same sports suspension as the 320d, I was told the only difference is the engine, everything else is also carried over or specked up. The 328i is seriously impressive, fantastic steer but you have to pay, this is a skoda enthusiasts chat page so I'm not trying to take that away from anyone here, as I too am a very big fan.

                  • The soon to be replace C-Class is a very good car. I have the pre-facelifted model, the Kompressor model to be exact. Space wise, there is no comparison, It's quite cramped inside the merc. Refinement wise, it's very close. Merc offers more cosseting and quiter drive as opposed to firmer and rawer drive on the RS.

If space is no issue and you don't need the sporty drive, can't go wrong with the merc, never have a single problem for the past 7 (almost) years of ownership. The car is built like a tank.

Otherwise, RS for the bigger space, performance and smile factor.

merc looks fantastic. I'm only going by most of the reviews I've seen comparing bmw vs merc, this is basically what most of the reviewers are saying comparing the 2. Can I ask 99reza, assuming you might have kids, if you ever said to yourself that you could todo with more room. The skoda is purely a family fun car purchase for us.

                      • Stiv: I do have a kid and child seat seat has been a permanent addition to the car and for the next few years. With the child seat on, it's very cramped indeed on the merc, you will have hard time fitting two adult comfortably at the back. With Skoda, not a problem. Yes the Skoda is my fun family car as well . Not to mention it's an excellent doggie transport as well, lots of space on the wagon and with the way the car rides, the dogs has no problem balancing on their legs.

I find the new 3 series bmw to be about the same size in the rear as the skoda octavia, I think the skoda has slightly a tiny bit more in the back. I thought the merc and bmw where about the same size in the rear. Or is the merc slightly smaller than the new 3 series? I know the skoda wins hands down for boot size in any car

                          • When I showed my Octavia wagon to a few people and told them that the car is around $30k, "wow, all these for only $30k?" Is the common response

                            • The Octavia might be the same back seat room as a 3 series but I have a feeling the boot space would be quite a bit more in the Octavia.

                              • Boot space on the Octavia is a big plus, but the console box and glove box are too small, the ones in Mazda 3 that I traded in are much bigger. I could fit a Melways in the glove box with room left to put chargers and even a smaller first aid box in the Mazda3 glove box. I could not fit a Melways in the Octavia and could not even fill the glove box fully as it would hit the media unit...
