Every car has its faults, but so far it's exceeded my expectations. The real test will be how I feel about the car in a few years.

      • Anyone have a idea why there is no rear view camera available - even with the Sat Nav ?

        • It's intentional marketing on the part of VAG, to maintain a point of difference between VW and Skoda.

            .

That's what I was told too, by a Skoda salesman.
If true it's pure bastardry not to offer a potentially life saving device for the sake of separating different VAG brands.

Having put a lot of klms on cars with reversing cameras, I think they are excellent and will be compulsory in the near future.

Reversing cameras are an aid for reversing a car. They should not be thought of as a solution for backup accidents involving kids. Why?
Because they don't automatically stop the car if it senses/sees an obstacle. The cameras are no good for children already below the bumper or running in from the side.

The only solution is to reduce the times you need to reverse near children and to make sure whilst you are in the car you can SEE all the children whilst you reverse. Some say that driveways etc should be fenced off from toddlers like pools.

No one's saying you depend on it exclusively but like with ABS and traction control, they are all safety aids that potentially saves lives. I believe that there are studies showing benefits of adding the camera. And removing the option just cos of a "branding" exercise is stupid.

My other car has a reversing camera which I find great for hooking up a trailer, but it has its limitations. The Skoda has a 360° radar which pops up on the 8 inch screen at low speed and in reverse. In some ways it is better than the camera and there is on way you could reverse over a kid or any sizeable object without it showing up.

Incidentally, the side sensors are part of the Park Assist automated parallel and perpendicular parking system which my wife loves.

Ideally you'd have a choice, but it's pretty good.

I would prefer the 360^ sensors to a camera - that way you glance down at the sensors every so often (plus audible warning) and you're not staring down at your sat nav screen, ignoring the dog thats running under the car from the front.
Obviously thats just an example but you get my point

On my Tiguan, I have both the 360 sensors and the camera. They are both displayed on the display at the same time. This is not an exclusive or option.

                          That's obviously the best solution.

Obviously that is ideal, but either VAG or VWA have decided not to let the Octavia get the camera, so he was just explaining that 360 sensors isn't a bad compromise...

                            • I probably would have bought a Passat or Golf if Kessy was available, as this was a must have for my wife, but VW don't make it available in Australia.

                              • I don't want any of the accessories. I want a AWD wagon, 2.0 l turbo and a 6 speed manual gearbox. I ll settle for A/C and "cruise" every thing else is excess baggage and bound to cause drama. I can live without reversing cameras, elec. windows, remote boot motors, auto wipers/headlights, traction control etc, etc. Maybe they ll make a vRS 'track version'........As if...
