    • LED's work with the $0.40 ceramic resistors from Jaycar - no bulb out error!!

        • After a lot of waiting, I've finally gotten the LED light bar mounted up and working!!

It looks nice and hidden, IMO.
We'll see how it looks tonight... But so far, in the garage, it looks great!!

          Lights off.

          Lights on!

It took the blokes down at the Auto Electrics two hours to mount it, drilling holes in increments (4mm, 6mm, 8mm, 10mm, 12mm) to get through the metal... Tough, right? No wonder I couldn't do it!

Nope, this is auxiliary high beams!

So, in my ignorance...does it drain much power?
If the engine was not on to keep the charge up, would it affect the battery at all?

                • Its 80W of LED's. The two Halogen bulbs in your high beams pull 55W each. (110W total)
This light bar is amazing. Simply beautiful at night. Definitely worth the cost!

The halogen bulbs in your LOW beam also draw 55W each. HID bulbs in the low beam draw 35W each, thats 70W total.
So if you were to leave your halogen low beam, halogen high beam and LED light bar (300W total) on, it would drain the battery relatively quickly... But why would you leave your high beams on?!

On the 10min long drive home from my girlfriends, yesterday, I saw:
3 cats under 3 different cars
                  1 bat flying
1 owl on a telegraph pole
                  1 possum in a tree
2 rats/mice/small-native-animals running across the road (more than 50m away)
                  2 frogs jumping accross

And when I went for a drive to give the light a long test, I saw:
                  8 wombats
                  3 roos
                  2 more frogs
                  1 baby fox (very cute)
                  2 adult foxes

The select few of those I would have seen with the normal Halogen low beam would have been a roo that jumped out infront of me, 2 wombats and the baby fox!

This is seriously the best upgrade I could have done, regarding country driving.
The light throw is phenominal, the beam pattern is perfect, and the sideways angle of the light is excellent, especially given that its behind the honeycomb.

                    • So, I finally found the time to take a few shots of the different grades of headlight on my particular Octy vRS.

                      Fogs:

                      Low beams:

                      High beams:

The highs look like overkill in my driveway, sure, but out on the open road - they're awesome!!
All thanks to the LED light bar!

To be honest, they're Narva Ultra Blue's and with the headlight tint they're even more useless.
You can't even see the H1 halogen bulbs, that's all LED light bar.

                          • Hey "Mysticality", you seem to be pretty into your lights. I'm wondering how you think the LED bar compares to Driving lights with HID bulbs.

I have always run Hella driving lights. Usually Rallye 4000 with HID bulbs and ballist. I did have a set of IPF years ago but the painted tin reflector had nothing on the mirrored glass reflectors of the Hella.

Anyway, I have a Skoda Yeti due to arrive late Jan/ Early Feb and I was considering a set of Hella Rallye 4000 compacts with HIS bulbs and ballists but I like how you have the LED bar concealed. I know LED bars have fantastic light spread which is suited to windy mountain roads but I do a lot of outback driving more long streaches than corners.

                            Just interested in your opinion.

                            Happy Days.

                            • I'd be interested to see the same shot of your driveway on high beam without the LED's. Just to see how much extra they give. Looks to be a good even spread of light.

Let me start by saying this: LED Light Bars aren't the same light as HID driving lights.
LED light bars have a massively wide spread, whilst HID's are great for long distance.

The high beams on the Octavia are great, if you're travelling down dimly lit country lanes where the walls are nice and close and there aren't very many long straight sections. Sorta like the UK countryside!... However, they're useless for anything else.
My work area is anywhere from Blackheath to Sydney North Shore, to Wollongong to Wingello, and I'm often home at night. The stock high beams just wouldn't cut it for anything apart from the straight sections of Mac Pass... And some of the long straights on the M5/Hume Highway near Campbelltown.

You don't have your vehicle yet - but when you get it, turn the fog lights on. The fogs are a very wide beam (since they double as cornering lights)
Imagine them pointed more up, and extremely white. Thats the LED light bar.
It doesn't throw very far, but the halogens are so much of a spot in the middle that it doesn't matter very much.

I'm getting a little off track, here. I'll make it short and blunt.
                                LED = wide, short distance
                                HID = spot, long distance
Ultimately, you'd be best off with a combination of both (Perhaps mount a light bar to a roof rack?) but if you're doing a lot of outback (or similarly flat straight terrain) then I would 100% recomment the HID's instead.
If you're doing a combination of both, but leaning more towards twists and turns, then the LED is the way to go. Then you can still rely on the stock Halogen's to take some of the eye strain out when you're racking up the miles on the highway.

No worries! Will do when I get back - I'm in Maryborough, Qld at the moment.
At the moment the switch is plugged into the leads and wrapped up behind the front passengers carpet slash pollen filter and air con fan panel behind the glove box - I haven't mounted it yet. Haven't had the time!
I'll also have to put the standard colour bulbs back in. I've put Narva Ultra Blues in, mostly for looks (considering they hardly do anything now anyway) and they really are useless.
