Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

  • As long as it is a voluntary recall I plan to ignore it.

Only thing that is possibly tempting is to get the inlet pipe airflow smoothing insert that they show in the youtube video and install that myself to see if that improve performance/mileage without allowing VWA to tamper with my ECU.

The car isn't ADR compliant. The fix makes the car ADR compliant. While the recall is on it won't be an issue as you can say 'I've not got around to it" but in 12, 18 months time... that won't fly. I'd be careful about what you say online and to others.

Hit another car - Toyota, minor bingle probably nothing will come of it. Hit a few cars, power pole, and into a house. I suspect the insurance company will spend the time and effort to determine if they are not liable.

There are all these little caveats in insurance policies. DUI - policy is void. Speeding in excess of a nominal amount over the limit - policy is void. Driving while un licenced (because you forgot to renew) null and void. Driving a non ADR compliant car (exhaust, suspension, imported tyres not sold here, incorrect sized tyres that were not OEM etc can affect ADR compliance...) they'll find a way not to pay...

      • Cheers and thanks Minke, if and when it becomes a Mandatory Recall then I will reconsider my options.

Search for the recall of a specific consumer product or types of products. There are steps suppliers should follow to run a recall and actions consumers should take when a product is recalled.

I'm not sure where it says it is a voluntary recall. In fact the wording is:

might suggest it is less than voluntary due to 'regulatory requirements'

As promised we will update you with information as it comes to hand.

This morning we have confirmed that we will conduct a voluntary recall in Australia for affected vehicles fitted with EA 189 diesel engines. Rest assured that we will cover the cost of all necessary measures and do everything in our power to try and win back your trust.

To see the full statement please visit www.volkswagendieselinfo.com.au

We will keep you informed in a timely and transparent manner, as regaining your trust is of utmost concern to us.

            Thanks,
            Your Volkswagen Team
I have received a number of follow up emails and announcements from VWA, none of which have indicated that the recall has been changed from voluntary to mandatory.

            • If you want to sell the car on and are getting a RWC, would you need to have the car brought in for the recall to get it to comply? Would it technically fail getting a RWC? I mean, it is operating "normally" from when the car was manufactured, but does this change everything?

              • Don't know. I have not found any formal advice on that yet.

I believe the authorities are waiting on technical details from VW before they make a ruling (probably waiting on CARB and the Europeans to make rulings that we will just follow). I would assume if the ruling is that the recall action must be taken to get an RWC then the recall would become mandatory (ie vehicle is not roadworthy/safe therefore mandatory recall). Things will get very interesting in terms of the legal class action and our rights under the Trade Practices Act.

                • Volkswagen says (Volkswagen Australia Diesel Emissions News & Information)
"Final testing of the remedies is underway with the aim to have no adverse effects on engine output or fuel economy."

As anticipated, in Australia with our reasonable fuel quality (as compared with USA), there will probably be little issue with performance or economy. Will have to see the numbers when the proper fix is released.

The class action doesn't look so appealing.....

We have to wait to the dust (read misinformation from major stakeholders) settles on this before anyone really knows what is happening.

And as for claims about the number of people killed we should lock up all owners of LandCruisers and Hiluxes, they're mass murderers!

                        • Last night was reading in a german car magazine the results of the first recalls of Dieselgate in Germany. Both were Amaroks and were tested before and after software update. Results came back that engine performed slightly better with of up to 7HP in one and 3HP gain in the other with torque going up to additional 9Nm. Also sprint times improved slightly. On the downside fuel consumption increased by 0,5 to 0,7 liters per 100km. But they expect that increase in fuel consumption would be less on other models as they are smaller, lighter and more aerodynamic than the Amarok. Emissions throught the post-update test remained stable as they should have been in the first place. Maybe not all bad news so far.

                              • They're effectively saying that the EU emissions legislators were in their pocket all along......and judging by recent legislative changes, they still are.
