Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

  • Based on ICCT data, every other carmaker has more to fear on the CO2 problem than VW.

I think it is more than likely VW group customers will be looked after, because they have the ability to sue at least under consumer law for compensation if they are not (ACCC implied as much since it is looking at remedies). Anyone selling their VW group vehicle before compensation is taking a loss they probably don't need to.

I guess that begs the question - if someone takes a loss selling their vehicle, can they still sue VW for that monetary loss if they no longer own a vehicle whose new owner will be compensated?? (maybe) Or will compensation only apply to original owners? (probably) and later owners just get their cars fixed without further compensation? (since they knew about the issue before they bought in)

How can you determine if they have taken a loss? The secondhand sales channel is a marketplace and there are no fixed prices (for that matter, so is the new car market, but at least there are RRPs). Therefore, there is no inherent value to measure against. Sure there are guides, but they are just guides. With respect to your question about who gets the compensation (if any), that is an interesting one. You sure would have difficultly proving loss if you were one who sold; but equally, VW would have difficulty proving that every secondhand buyer was aware of the scandal and what the implications of their purchase was. They would definately get the fix, but they might also get the compensation if they successfully proved that they just didn't. One thing is for sure, VW would not pay both.

      • My guess is that they'll be moving heaven and earth to pay neither.

Please explain"honest" ? Honesty is accepting the deciet and looking to what could possibly be the fix, now a person with your experience should have honestly being able to make an educated guess or post a few theories, as to the effects of the Ecu fix. Instead you nitpick any negative vw post by numerous people, try to make the deciet look less than it is and try to divert attention. That's not very tolerant of others points of view IMHO.

Actually on scandals, you among others raise the toymota/ford past issues. The thing is if an airbag was designed on PURPOSE to blow bits of steel and plastic at the driver it would be a far bigger scandal ,with criminal charges, than one designed correctly but because of mass production issues causes injury. Ditto the ford fuel tank imagine the screaming and murder charges if a fuel tank was purposefully designed to incinerate the car when hit? Instead these items where either tested in prototype but not with the variables of mass production, or in fords case not thought about at all. That's the major difference this was designed on purpose to scam the epa/eu rules.

It may be a "good car for you" but not for many others. DSG issues, egr problems , replacement parts cost such as gearbox, and now vw caused depreciation and more potential parts issues, that makes a ****subishi look like a smart investment don't make it a good car to many.
Then again being in your field any sort of emissions fix that shortens the life of certain parts ,such as egr, would be a massive windfall wouldn't it?:thumbs up

Arcadelt you determine a loss from historic values, most people know this. Previously a crummydore held much better resale than a Magna which eventually killed their fleet market. In vw's case historically a Tiguan had a residual value at 3 years and avg km that was worth say 60% ( not actual figures before nitpickers arrive!)percent of retail, now after the Nox scam that has dropped from 60 to less than 45% of retail. These are showing up in auction sites in the USA and here.
I'm not going to argue with you, because it is pointless. Just remember that happy people live longer.

looks like mk7 2.0 motor .. wonder if the mk6 2.0 motor is affected .. my guess is .. YES ! (i.e. my mk2 VRS Octavia).

This explains why dynos get such high readings from these motors in stock form.

                • I thought CO2 emissions were directly associated with the quantity of fuel burned - a function of relative economy.
Combustion temps are not the problem like diesel so how would they fake CO2/fuel consumed relationship during the test cycle?.

They faked their fuel consumption test by according to the article, overinflating tyres(this will reduce drag and was an old salesman trick for non power steering cars , but it would increase the risk of a blowout causing a crash and potentially permanently damage the tyre depending upon the pressures reached ), and reducing the oil thickness by putting in diesel with the oil. This would have the potential to damage the engine a fair bit. I wonder if they had a third ECU program for fuel efficiency with a specific activation code?
Also you gotta feel sorry for the poor sod who bought the "factory demonstrator" models as they have a 1/2 rooted engine and potentially stuffed tyres!

p.s no soup for you Oz! Dieselgate: No goodwill plan yet for Aussie owners, says VW

Let the "I'm not an employee" /I wont benefit from this/ fan boy /I haven't read the article or VW's announcement but ,parade roll on.
Pumping up the tyres and thin oil is not the least like a scandal as an switchable ECU cheat is.
                    Try harder!

                      • This thread is a rant fest for some. I wonder if they considered that they're partly responsible for the devaluation of all VW cars by way of publicising dissatisfaction with a brand.

                        • According to the Financial Times, if VW's re-testing of those affected vehicles reveals that CO2 emissions have been understated by more than 10%, then customers will have the opportunity to sell their cars back to VW at the current market value.

Dealer correspondence leaked to Autocar shows that in response to concerns from VW’s British sales network, the company is going to top up any discounts offered to existing customers trading in a VW of any age with a further cash incentive - £400 on the Up city car, rising to £1000 on the Golf and Passat, and £1500 on the Touareg and Sharan.

So if we all shush about the deceit and issues we can scam the used car buyer into paying more for the car with those problems.
WARNING to readers. Frantic has made pretty much NO contribution to this forums other than to fuel a fire of hatred and deceit (claiming the cars now have a "problem") regarding the emissions scandal. I just looked up his history and almost nothing for years, then joins the VW Hater's Party to spread animosity. He should be banned for trolling.

I have sparred with frantic more than most, and while I believe that the accuracy of some his claims is suspect and his manner a little more robust than what I usually see on VWW, I disagree with Elmura's call to have him banned. It is always worthwhile having alternate voices in the mix of discussion. If he is banned, that will send a message to all others who agree either fully or partially with his views that they are not welcome here, and then the discussion will the one sided and dull in the extreme.
