Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

  • Looked at the bad exhaust pipiing in the WVU study:

Can compute pressure loss with a formula like this.
Air Duct Components and Minor Loss Coefficients

Pressure varies with v-squared, so a lot worse with high exhaust velocities. The loss coefficient for different bends is in the table. Compare factor of 1.3 for 90deg bend (VWs) with 0 for tapered reduction (BMW).

Also looks like the VW with single exhaust had the same bad pipe as double exhaust with one side just blocked off. This would induce resonant chamber effects as well as screwing up flow.

        • Reading further Minor Loss in Pipe or Duct Components

The minor loss coefficient - ξ - ranges values from 0 and upwards. For ξ = 0 the minor loss is zero and for ξ = 1 the minor loss is equal to the dynamic pressure or head. The minor loss coefficient can also be greater than 1 for some components.
A right angle join (1.3) has a loss greater than the forward pressure! I wonder if this factor accounts for reflection or do reflected pressure waves count more negative effects?

          • For what it is worth a media release from the ACCC

On a personal note, I have booked our Passat into the dealer for a service. This will buy us some time to assess the recall

            • Consumer watchdog ramps up VW investigation

Can't we get the $1.1M instead of them?

Not sure if this link has been posted in this thread, but people were wondering where to "sign up" for the possible class action.

Ditto. Also getting the car dyno tested later today and organizing a full capture of onboard EMS software in case there's already a flash fix. Apart from that, not much can be done for now.

Wonder what they will designate as one "breach" ... each car, each brochure, each ad ?

"According to the ACCC, the maximum penalty per breach of the ACL is $1.1 million for a corporation."

                          • a legal case in australia will depend on what they are trying to claim.

a vehicle that passes testing has passed.
consumers will notice no issues. worse consumer law problems if a retune changes economy or performance.

stiil remains go be demonstrated how much nox tdis emit with fuel to specification 51 cetane.

if the ecu map uses less nox control to manage other parameters, it could be legally argued not to be a "defeat device" in usa.

I'll get it done at the VW service centre now, and address any niggles the car may have to make sure she's absolutely tip top shape. Then I'll wait out this storm and see what happens. If they're gonna patch software, then flurk going back to VW for servicing. Will also go to a non dealer specialist where I can specify NOT to upgrade the EMS.

I really hope VW pulls their finger out and sort this mess out sooner rather than later.

I'd happily sell you my carbon credits to "help" the environment. Offers above $770 million per tonne CO2/NOx considered.
