  • Well for a start the rebuilding place is in the UK , I would hate to think how much the freight would be for a whole engine !! I would get in touch with this crowd for starters ASV Euro Car Parts – European Auto Spares, they may be able to find a late model engine for you or they may know of someone who does reco work . But a warning I asked a diesel engine rebuilding company at Nerang on the Gold Coast some years back about rebuilding my son's T4 diesel engine 2.4 litre OUCH ! they told me it could cost around $12000 to do a complete overhaul . So I bought a whole good working T4 van off ebay for $3600 pulled the 2.5 petrol engine out gearbox fuel tank lines and electrics and exhaust and did a transplant . The son got a great more powerful engine and we refitted the old diesel back in to the Ebay van did some panel and paint and general tidy up and managed to sell it back on Ebay for close to $6000 !! How many kays has the van done by the way ?

I reckon you could buy a new engine off VW for that!

        • You are probably right , lets face it parts are ridiculous in price these days from dealers . I have had two Mercedes B class cars in the last month which have had damaged sunroofs . Both cars were written off by the insurance company because Merc wanted $10000 just for the whole sunroof , the cars were only insured for around 8 to 10 grand . A gearbox for a T series would be around $10 k mark from the dealers and engine around the same , to me thats pretty hard to swallow the engine is worth almost one quater of the vans original cost . The article Andrew posted is pretty alarming as it seems VW knows there is an issue and I would have thought if anyones engine was a victim they should replace it free of charge .

          • Well thats crap, if i recall there were a few guys on here how pressure VW Aus..

I don't know if they got any %%% off a new engine through goodwill.

but it is worth sending them a private message, as this might give you an idea on recourse of a known manufacturing issue.

            • Strange, I’ve serviced many T5.1 and even at high mileage they’re quite reliable. The 2.0TDI is very solid unit if serviced and used correctly, I mean if you do short trips or drive hard then you change the oil every 6months/7,500km whichever come first.

Those, with the secondhand, bought from the emergency services should be aware of that the engines in these vehicles have a very hard life and are belted from the word go. ...and don’t expect they get better service, quite opposite could be the truth since it’s known that the ambulance services, police and other big companies don’t keep them for too long.

Thats a very good statemant about emergency vehicles , they sit in the stations with cold engines and then get started up with no warm up and go like a bat out of hell to an emergency , makes sense that some of them will have issues . Good call Transporter .

                • Another thing to keep in mind, is that if your rebuilding the engine, i'd be deleting the DPF, as i believe this was the cause of this issue in the earlier 132kW CFCA engine.

I've got the CFCA engine in my 2017 transporter, but i believe its got a redesigned DPF part.

But as Transporter pointed out, these ex emergency vans do have a hard life, although some of them are just used as a patient transfer which would be a less stressed van.

...and I bet you, that they still service them only every 12 months/15,000km.
Despite they’re driven under severe driving conditions.

                    • My understanding is that the the T5GP Bi-turbo engines with high oil consumption, are as a result of EGR valve failure, where the engine has injested fragments of the EGR valve. Thus scoring the bores, leading to high oil consumption.

Well if your read the local VW chief's comments on an Australian motoring website about VW not offering longer warranty periods on their vehicles, the issue with dealers not doing as asked by HQ and the handling of customers issues by VW here in Australia compared to their opposition then don't hold your breathe....and the arrogance that came through wasn't appreciated.

Yes you are correct, i just put it in the same basket, the old version appears to be causing the issues, version D is the replacement, haven't seen any long term reviews on it

but my point was that if you were going to put in a new engine, i'd just delete it all, although this isn't legal.

I've got version D, i had my oil tested from the first oil drop and will continue to see what happens.

Oil tests are cheap in the whole grand scheme of things ($30-40), and valuable legal data in case of warranty claim.

I see a few car warranties offering longer 5-7 years but VW isn't keen to do that.

You can apply that to most of the brands. There are extended warranties for many goods we buy, not just the cars.
