  • TDI DOA....options?

Our Multivan (Late 2010) has the single turbo TDI, and the other day the fan belt broke, then jumped under the timing belt and proceeded to ruin an otherwise reliable engine.

The mechanics have gone as far as to reset the timing belt and wind the engine and there is no compression, presumably the valves are now bent, and whatever else happens on these occasions.

Their quote comes in at a mind blowing $12500, for sourcing and fitting a second hand engine.

I can't afford that, what options should I consider?

I'm on the north coast, NSW, currently unemployed, and now have no means of transport. It's amazing how a simple thing can really make life hard.

    Cheers

Try Matt at Camden GTI for an engine.

      Sorry to hear Gaz

Its amazing that these days an entire engine is seen as the "fix" to a lot of things that used to be repairable ..... cylinder heads can be fixed and reconditioned for far less than the cost of a replacment engine in most cases.

Try these guys and save quite a few $1000s in the process The Reconditioning Process | Southside Cylinder Heads, Engine Reconditioning Australia

...and still are repairable today, but If the engine damage is greater than only to the valve guides and the valves than the replacement engine would be more economical option, faster one too.

Wow that's a bummer but its not an unusual event , there are a few people who have experienced the belt being dragged into the engine on these models > Apparently there is a modification that is available from VW to prevent the belt getting dragged into the engine . It's just a bit sad that something like this is not covered by some sort of goodwill from VW . But I suppose if the belt failed because of lack of service then VW would be in their right to refuse any help but if the van was serviced at regular schedules then I would make an appeal to VW . If they make a modified part to prevent a problem then is seems to be a an admission that they know its an issue .

Have you considered contacting your insurance company?
