Yes but there was no electronics in the old autos. Lots of electronics, bathed in hot oil, slamming around under a big heavy van with tdi torque applied to everything. Sounds like an engineering nightmare doesn't it?

The problem is massive, but covered up at all levels. Vw replace mechatronics units, then gearboxes, then it's out if warranty, so tough poo.
i get a couple of people a week coming into my shop asking how they can make the box work well enough to sell the car because they are so over the problem. There is no easy answer.
The best solution is buy a manual one!
Big grunty diesel, big heavy van attached to a complicated electronic auto, what could possibly go wrong?

Seen heaps of broken ones.

I know that the passenger cars have the problems you described.....but on Transporters???
You say you have seen heaps of Transporter DSG failures. They are only starting to come out of warranty recently.....so wouldn't they have gone to the dealers for warranty repairs?

Agree 100% our older T5 which had the Tiptronic also has failed at 135.000 kays $11000 all because they would not service it properly , these are the same people who we are told are the best people to service your VW when it all goes pear shape they just ignore you .

T5 DSG dropping gear? WTF HELP?
Well I just picked up the van, went in on Friday morning to pick up some more tools for work and they told me it would be ready that arvo.
Apparently the parts shipment had arrived earlier that day instead of next Monday like they told me (but it left me wondering that now I had the rental van for longer at their cost if suddenly the parts got a hurry up)
I couldn't get back yesterday before they closed so it had to be today.
First drive all seems good, but I've only driven down the road for lunch where I sit now. Ill give it a drive on the f3 over the weekend.
I did get them to do the Oil and filter in the gearbox, charged $122 for that. Pre warranty expiration check was free with nothing coming up (not sure if that's good or bad)
Enquired on extending the warranty - $4400 for a 2 year extension, gearbox already covered for further 2 years, so I'm left pondering what else I should be worried about other than the gearbox and if its worth the cost up front?
How do the new consumer laws on extended warranty hold up with this kind of thing?
On a side note i found my front passenger side wheel has a nice big chunk out of it, the van has been moved around onsite there a few times. Pretty much every time I went in it was somewhere new. Was told to call back Monday when the service department is open. I've taken pics of the damage and the freshness of it. What do you think my chances are of compensation for it?

That's pretty nasty I would be mad as hell if it had been mine hope you get a fix for that, did you find it after leaving or while at the dealer ? . As for the Pre warranty check maybe its just me but if you stop and think would they tell you if there was something that they would need to fix at their cost or just say nah mate its all good and the following week or whatever something goes bung and they leave you holding the bag . Maybe an independent mechanic would be a safety net to make sure the dealer is not dodging something , I know not all dealers would be like that but there does seem to be some who have a reputation for missing the obvious .

T5 DSG dropping gear? WTF HELP?
First decent drive today in traffic,Berowra F3 to Lanecove around 45 minutes. Speed - 110kmh to 60kmh stop and go along pacific highway.
Tried manual shifting and it all seems smooth. D mode also seems very smooth. Nothing showing of the previous symptoms.
However there is a much more noticeable lag when almost coming to a stop at giveways and roundabouts, which I know I've read about others having issues with. Until now it had never been a noticeable issue for me, but seems to give a real lurch actually making your body move forward as your expecting to go and nothing happens. Maybe it's from driving the crappy hiace they loaned me!
Perhaps it needs another update, not sure if the new mechatronics unit would be up to date?
Going to go in on the way home and have a chat about the wheel damage, very Keen to see what they say.
UPDATE - dealer just called me to ask about the problem with the wheel, going in this afternoon for them to have a a look and discuss.Last edited by Foxpuppet; 06-05-2013, 09:13 AM.

Hope it goes well with the wheel issue , DSG's have been noted for a lag even some members reported dirty underwear events after nearly getting cleaned up through roundabouts and intersections . My wife is still unable to get a clean take off when entering our driveway , she approaches the driveway after driving up a hill to our house , she slows down almost to a stop and then enters the driveway with a screech of rubber as she tries to get a smooth entry .

I would recommend the fluid change at 60k but its a grey area is it in the service book in Australia? It is in the USA but here I don't know.
