Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled
After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.
Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before.
We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

i spent about 6 months with a dsg, over a couple of years, i would agree with umai naa. i think/ though it felt strange at first, but once i got used to it i can understand why some would like it. it was starting to grow on me. the one i drove was a freeby though, so i could drive it like a hire car without thought of cost etc. this may have influenced my thoughts on it. im a manual myself though because like sunny, i like to be in control of what im doing. damn curious if anyone has 4wd with dsg. i think they would be getting bogged a lot more.

I drove another forum members Superb TDi a little while back.
The experience with his dsg was a lot like what people describe when they have had a negative experience.
It was very hesitant at takeoff, then would be very aggressive with letting out the clutch in 1st and 2nd. Not very pleasant at all. Was like driving with a learner in a manual.
The dealer had told him it was because he was towing but after driving my car he was of the same opinion as me- there was definitely something wrong with the dsg.
Not sure what the latest is but sounds like he is having the usual problems with vwa not being proactive.
It's a shame as my experience with the A3 and now Octavia has been flawless and particularly in the A3 a lot of fun.

I have a 2012 T5 4motion 132kw DSG Crew Van and largely agree with the experiences expressed above.
I have only had it for about 6 weeks and have come from an auto Nissan (imported) and I thought the Nissan had issues with throttle restriction on take off by the ECU.
BUT the VW is at times much worse. On a normal take off it takes off reasonably well but certainly can feel the gearbox not fully engaging.
The worst scenario is when stopped, going quickly from the brake to the throttle to enter another road, so usually turning as well. On many occasions the van almost feels like it stops. As I am aware of this problem, I have been paying attention to what is going on and I have noticed that the rpm's are around 1800-2000 rpm before the clutch engages.
I would think this is more to do with the ECU and Gearbox ECU limiting clutch engagement based on particular parameters. These seem to be Brake pedal depressed / Steering angle.
IN2VW's, what is the software upgrade?
Cheers
Andy

I forgot something in relation to the DSG I think the Skoda has the same box please correct me if I,m wrong ? but last year I had to do some work in Mackay and picked up a Skoda hire car at the airport , to be quite honest I remember telling my son who was with me that the auto was at best described as weird . When you stopped and then took off it seemed to be very strange in how it reacted it would suddenly go like hell from stopped and you would have to back off . Not a pleasant drive but as some one else pointed out may be you adapt to its quirkiness over time .

In all other respects, it's a ball - flick it up/down, use it for engine braking while towing or whenever ... it's a real hoot; but not from a standing start!sigpic2011 T5 132kw 7spdDSG 4motion, '89 Citroen 2CV, 2006 Subaru Forester SG 5spd

Well I'm at the point now where I have developed such an intense dislike of the DSG ...... that I'm willing to sell a 15month old MV (with low kms) and buy a MANUAL 4-5 year old Multivan.
I'd love a new TSI Multivan, but can't face the prospect of another DSG gearbox ..... the dsg was not built for high torque engines and is prone to breaking down, this is the reasons why vw won't sell 4 motion with dsg, though I believe this year Amarok will come with a 8 speed auto as a option, and I would assume other 132 kw modela would have this option as well. I read this Some were and all so a dealer told me when I was ordering my 4motion last year.

I think that 4Motion comes only with DSG in T5.

If any of you DSG owners are in Melbourne, you are welcome to have a drive of mine to compare with your van if you like.

That's the only gripe I have with the 7 speed DSG box on my T5... (which, as I have indicated, is 4 Motion optioned.)Last edited by greymad; 03-05-2012, 05:13 PM.sigpic2011 T5 132kw 7spdDSG 4motion, '89 Citroen 2CV, 2006 Subaru Forester SG 5spd

Sorry to go over old territory but it was the article in the paper which is at the start of the thread relates to the DSG not being suitable for off road work VW admitted the fact . I suppose its a case of user beware as it seems that the DSG will give trouble in "Off Road "situations eventually . I would aggree with some a manual would be the safer option . MY T5 work van is a humble 2.0 litre petrol manual and I have to say at now nearly 180,000 kays it is still in one piece . The clutch is on its last legs as when I take off up the hill in front of home she gets a little slippery as the clutch engages at the last release point I can change gears almost with a simple tap on the clutch pedal with my toe !!!! But compared to our family T5 its been a hell of a lot more reliable and only cost half the price almost , just a summary family van tranny playing up fiercely from 60,000 to now 128,000 . water pump failed 50,000 sliding door nearly fell of rollers disintegrated 60,000 , intercooler hose problem same time , diesel fuel cooler holed [now discarded]. My work van water pump was only done with timing belt at 110,000 kays it was still intact !! other than brake pads which is normal its been pretty bullet proof {even if its a bit underpowered } and I might add the sliding door on work van is opened and closed dozens of times a day so why did a door with limited use on the other van fail ?? I would give serious thought to one of the new upcoming turbo 2.0 litres petrol models only with manual though !!

John, what was the issue sorted out by the software upgrade - was it initial lag on acceleration from a standing start?
That's the only gripe I have with the 7 speed DSG box on my T5... (which, as I have indicated, is 4 Motion optioned.)
The software upgrade fixed this on my van. It also shortens the hill hold time when taking off.
The only time it still does this, is when the motor is stone cold in the morning, and I go around the first corner from my house. I put this down to a cold engine/transmission etc.
