Hi there, I have just recieved an RNS-510 from OS to fit into my 05 Multivan. I was told when purchasing that it would be straight plug and play but discovered to my dismay when having it installed that although the unit physically fit perfectly - the wiring in my car was not compatible.
The RNS-510 runs on can-bus 2.0 and my vehicle does not have can-bus wiring at all! If it was later I could get an adapter to convert can-bus 1.6 to 2.0 but I don't think I will be able to install this great looking unit
Does anyone have any specialist knowledge that could help me out?

We have just bought a 2010 Caravelle. It came with a standard RCD210, and I would like to replace it with something better, hopefully a RNS510.

I am new to this, a a little confused with some of the terms used here. My van does not have a multi-function steering wheel (unless you count left and right AND beep-beep!). While the display is white it does not have any menus that I have found besides trip computer functions. The vehicle has a DSG transmission. Is my vehicle a T5.2?

As mentioned I would like to replace the RCDS210 with a RNS510. I would also like to retro-fit bluetooth, and perhaps a reverse camera. The question is, is this possible? Other posts here seem to indicate that the RNS510 can be fitted to post June T5s, but mine is earlier (Compliance date is March 2010).

      What are my options here?
If you have the new (current) T5.1 Caravelle , which went on sale in Oz in June 2010 then a RNS510 will fit. You do not need a MFD for it to work. RVC can be fitted but will be a big job. An interface to the RNS510 will be required and cabling from the back to the front.

Easy to tell, is yours the 2.0 TDI or the 2.5TDI? 2.0 is the new T5.1

So mine is a T5.1 as it's a 2.0 TDI. Out of interest is there anywhere all the nomenclature is listed ie T5.1, T5.2, T5GP etc. ?

I think I want to buy a RNS510, but I also want to know about Bluetooth. I have read about 9w2 9w7 etc. It would seem the 9wz/9w7 are the units of choice. Are these also possible for retrofit? And, without a MFD can I operate, the unit and pair phones?

You need to buy an RNS510 from a Touareg. You will need to cut the chassis frame at the back of the current radio so the unit will fit, this is quite hard. You will need to change the profile of the front fascia that houses all of the buttons etc. You can buy a can adaptor yes, to connect it up, or simply buy a basic block connector to pick up switched +/+/- and forget about CAN altogether.

It can be done, I have myself, but it is not for the feint hearted as it is quite involved and there are many steps that are not reversible.

I am taking delivery of a new van today that has the rns 310 radio which I want to upgrade to bluetooth and sat nav and maybe a camera depending on how good or bad the parking assist is.

The van already has the multifunction steering wheel with the phone buttons and media input, so my understanding is I need the RNS510 for about $900-1400 and the bluetooth kit which is about $500.

Do I need anything else and is the Lithuanian on ebay as safe as anyone else?

Definately get the reverse camera, Luke
It makes reverse parking a hell of a lot easier
The obvious looking for little munchkins before you reverse
And if you ever tow, it's great for checking your load on the go

Finally got around to configuring an IPad as a media player in the Multivan. Utilises BT Audio streaming (works perfectly) and plays through all the speakers in beautiful sound. Secured at the moment with a headrest mount but will improvise a roof mount. Post update when done.

Don't waste $$$$ putting a DVD player in ..... buy an Ipad and fit BT ....

I ordered my RNS510 from Lithuania on Friday and its already landed in Sydney and cleared the sorting facility.... superfast DHL. Downside is because im in regional NSW its likely to be Australia Post who delivers it and it will likely take twice as long to move 600km than it has taken to travel the 15,000 km to Sydney.

Sharkie, great thread and love the information.. It makes me sad as I just took delivery of a transporter Crew Van 4motion and did not option the Multi Function Display and Steering wheel but opted for an aftermarket head (Zenec) unit similar to the factory one.
After borrowing a Skoda whilst an item was fixed i realized how good the MFD is on these cars.
Does anyone know id the MFD and steering wheel can be retro fitted and if so where the parts can be sourced?

So I updated the firmware on the RNS510 yesterday ..... this was the result ....

Car outline in OPS is now a Van!

So in brief, to get a fully working RNS510 that VW will charge you $3950 for as a factory fit ..... buy 1 of Ebay, install, code and update the firmware to get exactly the same result for about a $1000 .....

BTW also updated the maps to V5 and it is pretty good ..... and finally, activated Video in Motion to enable watching DVDs while on the move .... (not for the driver obviously)

I'm picking up a 2010 Caravelle 2.0TDI on Thursday, also interested in an integrated system. It sounds like it is pretty straightforward to add the RNS510 if I can find one, but how about adding bluetooth and parking camera or sensors? I suspect I need a professional to help with the install...suggestions for Sydney?

It also doesn't have bluetooth fitted. I could actually get away without the reversing camera, although I'd like to have it - bluetooth and navi would do it. Is there any problem with mine being T5.1 instead of 5.2?
Post a picture of your dash and I will recommend which radio/sat nav to go for. I would not recommend most of the cheap Chinese stuff. If you dont want OEM, Sandy (DKN) has an option of any possible dash config from the ANS range. Can buy this outside of a group buy and it has local support and lifetime firmware and map (iGo) upgrades.

Sharkie, My image in the post above has been restored, thanks for the help! I asked Sandy about the ANS range and he said they might be slow and that AM could have problems...so I'm not that keen on them unless I know it will work, as I listen to ABC AM on the way to work. If I knew the DNS was coming out soonish I'd probably just settle on that, but it seems uncertain. My minimum requirements are bluetooth and camera, but I'd like integration with MFD if I can and if the navi is decent I'll get rid of the old TomTom as well. I'm using an android phone so iphone integration is not that important.

Sunny, I have to agree that it doesn't make much sense. If I buy the stock VW option it's $3k and doesn't even include bluetooth or camera for that price. Was quoted $2300 for Zenec with camera installed, but again, heaps of terrible reviews, AM problems, etc. My view of the Chinese units is that even if bluetooth works it's about the same price as having a parrot fitted.

What T5 do you have? You have the "newer" RCD210 but the colouring of the surrounds suggest a Transporter, correct? Given that you don't have factory BT, I'd suggest considering the ANS510 or 810, the equivalent DNS models (when they come out) BUT also an OEM RNS510. Off Ebay for about $900 incl shipping and for BT an OEM kit off Ebay.

BTW, I have a Parrot kit with VW2Go integration model with cables for either RCD510/RNS510 or RCD210/RCD310 that I used in my Tiguan. Its basic BT with no screen integration but it works. Yours for $50 if you want it.

Sharkie, it's an 02/2010 Caravelle if that makes it clearer. Have sent you a PM about the Parrot. I'm thinking that if I want the full unit the OEM is starting to sound better for my needs, but it's also sounding like $1500 installed with camera...so not sure anymore if I want to spend that much.

Sunny, FM announcers annoy the crap out of me but I like my dose of news in the morning. Thanks for the heads up, that solves the Chinese issue for me.
