Traction Control Module - P0864 error code

I'm a newbie - I purchased a VW T5 2.5TDI LWB about 12 months ago.....

I have had some issues which after searching this forum was able to deal with them.

Recently I have had what I believe were overboost issues where the van would go into limp mode shortly after starting and going up a short incline, this happen on 3 occasion. To deal with this issue I used fuel additive to clean the turbo etc - it seams to have worked as the problem has gone away.


Yesterday while driving home the van went into limp mode again, i automatically assumed that it was the same issue, I turned of the ignition to reset however the van struggled to start and vibrated when trying, after a while it did start. Once i turned the ignition off again at my next stop the same this happened.


I scanned the error codes it it came up with P0864.

I searched this forum but found nothing. Search google and it appears to be an issue with the traction control module.

It so happened to be that I was booked in for a service today and the Local VW service centre, hopefully they will be able to sort it out and I wont be out of pocket too much.

Has anyone else had the same issue?

Its hard to imagine Traction control causing engine problems , but from having a T5 myself when traction control does its Hogwarts magic it does reduce engine performance to control engine revs to aid with the traction control controlling whel spin . Its the old story these days like the thigh bones connected to the hip bone , now days the engine is connected to a hornets nest of things and us poor suckers get stung when it goes belly up . I hope you get to the bottom of the problem . PS my traction control light in my old 2005 T5 2.0 manual petrol job has been on for the last 4 years or more , Ivé learnt to ignore it !!

it seems the issue may be with the ECU. A number of modules are not communicating.

Its at a VW service centre, unsure if this is the best place after reading other threads. Hopefully will have some news today.

I have this gut feeling that they may not know what they are doing.

The issue has now been sorted, turned out to be a centralised fault with the transmission with no communication to the ECU.
