Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

  • AirConditioning Recycle Button Turns Off

    Hi guys,

I'm a courier & drive a brand new Caddy my company received in January.

Every day I'll jump back in my car, drive back into traffic & breathe in a lung full of bus fumes etc. This occurs because the A/C Recycle button has disabled itself. This drives me crazy because by then turning it back on, & trapping the fumes in the vehicle, would make things worse.

    What is going on here?

    Thanks.

Do you mean recycle or recirculation

If you read the manual it will probably tell you it turns off automatically so as you don't leave it on and go to sleep when the CO2 level rises and kills you.

      Its a safety feature.

        This.
I thought it was common knowledge that the recirc feature automatically resets to allow fresh air into the cabin.

Wouldn't the cabin filter do the job of sorting out the bus fumes, etc?

I'm not sure about the Caddy but the Octavia / Golf filters come in two types Pollen & Pollution. Maybe they have 2 options for the Caddy (or the Golf units fit)

            Pollen Filter (1K0819644B)

            Pollution Filter (1K2819653B)

Interesting as the Climate Control on my Caddy Maxi Life will only switch back to fresh air in after a certain amount of time after the ignition has been switched off. I can go an collect newspapers and be away for say 10 minutes, but when I get back in, it is still on recirculation. I haven't worked out how long it has to be off before it switches back to fresh air in.

As for traffic fumes, unless there is something belching out smote that is being sucked into your Caddy, there is little difference in the air quality for fresh:recirc. Even filters are not going to do very much, and if they do, they will block quickly.

go for a drive through the M5 tunnel and see if you still think there is a difference between recirc and fresh

                      Yep.

Even with a carbon activated pollen filter, it still gets fumy on 'fresh'.

FYI, the Caddy uses the same pollen filter as MK5/6 Golf, Jetta, B6-onwards Passat, and Tiguan. Also fits Octavia and Superb.

I have no doubt as it is akin to following a diesel belching smoke, and yes, I have been through the M5 tunnel and it is bad. A pollen filter will not do too much, and any freshener just means you are breathing in scented pollution.

When I was talking about traffic, I was talking about surface traffic.

On the M5 tunnel, it should have better ventilation. If a workplace were to provide such an environment for its workers, it would be closed down.

I have read the manual already. There is nothing about recirculation being turned off.

I should have mentioned it is an intermittent problem.
@wai Maybe it is time dependent.

If so this is a terrible feature. I've been driving for 20 years & never had to be saved from CO2 levels.

yes and even with surface traffic you get pollution pumped into the car since car exhausts are low to the ground at the rear of the car

give me old school closed recirc vent anyday

Have you got the AC on full cold..?

I find that if the temp is set all the way to COLD, it then sets itself to re-circulate..

Anything warmer and you have to manually turn it on every time you get in
