  • I run 215/40R17 Kumho V710s on the track without any clearance issues - and that's with PSS9 coil overs and a ride height slightly lower than the stock springs.

The 45 profile seems to be the killer - if you can find 215/40 in the 16" size that might be a good option.

215/40/17 all around. I think a 7.5 wide wheel is fine, not sure if there is any performance advantage to going wider. Still, 17x8 fit fine with the above tyre pretty low, no scrubbing. I'd have them as wide as will tuck, 35 on 8" works.

I run semis up front and don't care to much about the rear as it stays put with anything IMO.

      • I guess the offset of the wheels is the other factor - if you're into "poke" or "stance" then you are more likely to foul the guards than with stock offset.

I'm willing to bet the Polo is faster all the time tyre for tyre, size for size in a 16in wheel. There's plenty of Super grippy 205/16s, but I have the PS3s and there's not a whole lot more left if the regular tyre segment without going wider. KU31 comes in a 215/40/16 but I don't think this is really a grip upgrade as such, only more weight and noise...?

But isn't bigger rim, lower profile always better??

                • I would look at getting a set custom made by Team Racing Dynamics. They readily offer that kind of service. I would suggest something like 16x8" 32ET

I like this idea. Any idea what that'll cost per corner?

Worth it to deal with common misconceptions, IMO, so it helps others

Why so wide? There isn't any real point if you're only going to 215 as a max - it MIGHT make the tyre a tiny bit more stable on the rim but it adds weight as well.

I bought my set from here Performance Alloys.com . Hubrings and wheel bolts were included. Shipping was about A$400 to my address

First of all, I think you'll find that this size in the Kumho V710 (full track tyre) is not available directly in Aussie.

Noone, I'm fairly certain that are no semi's available in 215/40/17, (use to be) so what are you running on the front.

Greg, lower the profile the more the excessive heat comes into factor on the track.

Anthony, Team Dynamics don't do 16 x 8", been there, done that.

I lost three tyres in three track sessions in a row, so hopefully my info is correct & if not please put me straight.

P.S. I'm running 225/45/16 (rims = 16 x 8 with 35mm offset) for the track which is a common semi size (but not in a road tyre) & is a lot smaller in height than the 215/45/17 & only 5mm higher than the 215/40/17.
                        Hooroo.

Can't comment on Aussie availability but they're pretty easy to grab from Tire Rack which is where I buy mine - $880US for a set of 4.

                          • Eddy - no worries, I heard a while back they took custom sizes but could be wrong.

For 215/40R17 semi's there are a few now, my choice whould be either

                            • Here are the sizes available for the ProRace 1.2 - funny how there is only one option for 16" but heaps for 17" and 2 for 15"

I don't think Eddy regards those as proper semi-slicks. I would regard them as very high end road tyres (though jasonc23's Winton times on the Federals challenges that notion )

Bullet Fast, you got vwthunder to show how the 17" ProRace 1.2's look on a Polo. There are pics in this forum of mine with 15" size if you want to see a slightly smaller and less dropped look.
