Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

    • I rang Option1 Garage for another set of cheapo Kumho, they now aren't allowed to sell them at the discounted rate they used to as a "tyre franchise" got PO'd with the distributor. They quoted $167 for the KU31's in 205/45/16 when that I paid $100 for em 18 months ago, and $195 for KU36's. The fellow said they barely sell any Kumho anymore.

I've ordered bridgestone RE002's from Jax for $167 each.

I spoke with Bob Jane, the fellow wanted to sell semi slicks (Federal or Kumho) and didn't want to sell the Bridgestones when I'd asked about them. Now that my car will be a daily driver for the foreseeable future the semi-slicks aren't ideal, plus I have proper semi's on track rims for when things get serious.

              • Drop box dont host images.

Photobucket is a big one, pretty easy to use.

                  • Well, I bolted back on my stock wheels and tyres for last Sunday's cruise and I was pleasantly surprised by how well behaved the Continental PremiumContact 2's (195/55R15) were. Going at it pretty hard though tight, hilly roads they held on harder than I expected were very forgiving once they reached their limit (very progressive transition from gripping to sliding). The squealed as soon as the limits were approached under braking and cornering but continued to behave well.

                      • Thanks Mike. It took me a while to get back into cruise mode as early on, I was trying to conserve fuel and carry too much corner speed.

All us other guys have done a few track days so we're more familiar with our vehicles as they approach their limits which greatly increases confidence.

To keep up with the R32 (forget what n v's name is ), I would have needed to run my semi-slicks which then would have obliterated it (the grip from them is mental and gave me a sore neck on a run up the Reefton one time)

I couldn't believe Todd was driving like that with his kids in the back!!

Haha perhaps the two of you aren't aware as to how competitive Todd and Kylie are.

So... Given the following, how would you dress the car? Rim size width and offset, tyres... I'm leaning toward 16in to maintain the tyre profile. Yokohama Neovas are available in a 215/45/16

Polo GTI at Stage 3 tune,
Standard wheels with Michelin Pilot Sports at around 50% tread (ok, but not exceptional)
                              Standard brakes
Ever so slightly lowered with HR springs and FSD Koni, although I may change again
Will go to the track in the future, currently embarrassing sport bikes in NSW National Park...
Driven about 5000km a year, and any tyre short of a true road legal race tyre will be acceptable
To go to a 'better' size tyre a rim swap will probably be required at least in width and offset, also acceptable.

                              • Going wider than 205 gives clearance issues which require negative camber or guard rolling.
The 6R is better in this respect
