Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

    Hoyhoy.

Not custom made, but had to be made (in sliver) as none in stock anywhere, they are heavy but solid.

        Hoyhoy.

Greg I usually do a gentle running of new semi's, I buy from Gordon Leven @ Penrith then do a easy drive down to Goulburn.
Bill from Gordon Leven reckons that this a great first heat cycle for new semi's, so that's what I do.

        • I drove up the Reefton Spur going as fast as I dared, faster than any other time I've been up on any machine, and the A048's just went around the bends, no fuss, no bother and were barely warm to touch when I pulled over at the top. The break in was gentle compared to a track session but demonstrated to me just how much better semi-slicks are than normal tyres.

The Neovo AD08R's must be pretty good but on track, I'd bet they would fall apart more quickly than A048/A050's. Where they would be far better is as daily use tyres - the A048 is noisy and harsh (feels/sound like you're driving a stiff 4WD) and aquaplanes like a bar$tard once there is standing water on the tarmac and I doubt the A050 is any better (the difference is the tread pattern of the A050 is supposed to make the tyre less prone to overheating). I'd also imagine the AD08R wouldn't heat cycle in road use like the full semis.

I can't find the proper UTQG rating for the AD08R (TireRack have the same as the AD08 at 180) - the A048/A050 is 100 and the AD08 is 180 so I'd guess the AD08R would be around 140, like the Federal 595R (for persprective, the Kumho V810R is 30!!!)

I think the biggest difference will be that with semi's is that they won't go mussy as quick as good streety's because of less side wall flex.

                • Hi, Looking to sort tyres for my new (second hand '06) Gti that amazingly has the original fitment continentals still on it. They still have useable tread on them (its only done 28k) so i'll pick the least knicked/gutter rubbed 2 from the set and put them on the back till they go to the indicators and get a hold of a pair of fronts for now. I basically want the absolute best street tyre for <=200 bucks per corner. I'm not too fussed about rapid wear rates or noise but do want something that performs wet and dry. I've canvassed Yoko AD08's, bridgestone RE002's, Falken ziex ZE912's, kumho KU31's and Dunlop SP sportmax RT's. I think the yoko's might be too much but am I roughly comparing apples with apples with these tyres? From what I've read here I can't really go wrong with the RE001/2 and falkens, but I've read some mixed stuff regarding the KU31's and not sure whether they fit the bill? Also, just out of interest (since kumho do a 195/45/R16 that should fit 6.5" rims), has anyone tried running 205's on the front and 195's on the rear? Just figured the 195's might neutral out the handling in the dry and be progressive as they let go and yet bite nicely in the wet. any thoughts?

                  • The Official Polo Tyre Thread

The KU31 are not a performance tyre IMO, great for $100 a corner, but no comparison to the RSR's.

                    • I just got quoted $145 per corner for Kumho KU39's. Would I be mad to pass up that offer for what I'm after?

Should be OK if you have retained the original relative front/rear roll stiffness. If you've whacked on a rear anti-roll back and left the front stock, then I wouldn't do it.
Of course if the rear 195's are a grippier tyre than the front 205's, you may find that the balance doesn't change at all.

I am a 6R Polo GTI owner and browsing this thread trying to get some ideas as to what tyres I might purchase for 18 x 8 rims (Pro Race 1.2s) - 18 x 215 x 35 with more emphasis on comfort and looks than on performance.

jamesatfish or anyone else who has purchased through Tire Rack, approx. what postage do they charge for 4 tyres to Australia? I have sent off an online 'international form' to company and waiting for reply.

                          Thank you

                            I have a recent quote of US$330.00 for 4 tyres - 245/35/19 x 2 and 275/30/19 x 2. No doubt 4 Polo tyres would be less than that.

Thanks GRP you are correct. Just received my quote - postage for 4 Continental Extreme Contact DWS $262.95 Via FedEx International Economy - 6 business days $262.95. All up with postage and tyres $850. I have been quoted $295 ea locally (Tyrepower) for 18x215x35 Kumho 39s which is a rip off for a mid range tyre.

3 weeks before the rims arrive so I will keep looking.
