Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

Nope, not at all. Is your car chipped? I think the polo could do with wider tyres.

My 215/40/17's rub but they are a very wide 215, meaures like a 225 but im running a 29 ET, so you might be ok.

      • Think i will go 215/40/17 to be sure.

Bridgestone Adrenalin RE001's. KU36's only come in 215/45/17 or 225 which would be too wide.

              • Great, a fellow korean on the forum. 7" is fine for 205s and up to 225 I think.

I had 205 on 7.5" with some stretch - but not bad.

                  • Just got a set of Goodyear Eagle F1's to replace my original Conti's (43,000km).
I have had them for about 1,000km's now, and have just started to test them abit with spirited drives.
They seem to hang on for a tiny bit longer than the Conti's.

...and the tread pattern is hot. Hahahaha.

                    • One of my tyre popped today, and since the other tyres are nearly balded, i went to get all 4 corners replaced, was quoted $888 for 4 new Dunlop Sports Maxx TT (this is after 25%off xmas special) at Beaurepairs.

After leaving the car there for 2 hours, i was told that the supplier for Dunlop was on strike and the courier couldn't pick up the tyres, they got me Toyo Proxes 4 instead for $823, and obviously these are cheaper tyres, as the Maxx TT still cost more after discount, where as these Toyo are original priced. i feel abit ripped off, although i ended up paying less overall.

Based on research so far, Sports Maxx TT or even Sports Maxx are High end tyres (as well as CCS2), and the Proxes 4s are only mid range. I'm willing to pay more for tyres, so it feels like my hands are tight

I think I can get these toyo's from elsewhere for cheaper if i wanted them in the first place, eg. TTF

I was told they are better then the Maxx TT's in dry and wet, and will outlast them too, and the supplier guarantees this, as he has them on for his XR6 Ute and loves them & prefers them over Dunlops.

What do you guys think about the Toyo Proxes 4s ? anyone tried them?

                      Car - 06 Polo GTI
                      Rim Size - 16" Stock
New Tire - Toyo Proxes 4 (only done 10 Kms so far)
                      Price - $205 each fitted
                      Tire Size - 205/45/ZR16 87w
Tire Replaced - Dunlop Sport Maxx TT (Front), Continental Compact Sport 2 CCS2 (Rear)(one of the CCS2 in the rear popped in the side wall Aug last year, so i had to replace it, got two Dunlops instead)

                      Km's On new Tire - 10kms

Thoughts on New Tire - Dunlops Sport Maxx TT has more grip then CCS2 in dry and about the some in wet. Abit more noisier than CCS2.
Dunlop Maxx TT only done 20,000Km and it's balded, but i did have APR tuned most of the 20,00km and lowered half that time, so camber was impacting the inner tyre wear. (CCS2 has done 56,000Km, but they have always been in the rear)
Too soon to comment on the Toyo's.

Thoughts on Tyre - I've only been running this tyre for a 1000km's, so we will have to see how it lasts. I paid R685 (100AUD) per tyre, which I feel is a rather good price. I haven't been able to have a go at some laps on the track with them - although I don't use them for track - so I can't comment on how they perform when pushed to the extreme, but I feel that they are an all round good tyre. I feel they need a little heat in them to perform well, but my judgements might be a little off, due to the stretch nature of my setup.

                        • OK, a bit different to all the big/wide/low GTi tyre info.
My 2009 Bluemotion 2 has finally worn out the OEM Dunlop SP10e low rolling resistance tyres (165/70/14), these tyres have never been good from new (the sidewalls have strange 'bulges' that look to be related to the construction - I think they may be thin / lightweight sidewalls, part of ther fuelsaving thing), the wear rate is pretty poor. Just booked a set of Michelin Energy Saver, I have always preferred Michelin to Dunlop, my first Golf (1982 model purchased second hand) still had the original Factory fitted Michelin XZX up to nearly 10 years old (it WAS low mileage for age). I wanted to stick with fuel saving tyres for the Bluemotion and the Energy Savers are probably the best in this category, I'll let you know after they're fitted.

                          • Yay! Another like mind, at last. Is this your car?

Let us know how the Energys rate vs the OEM. I'm thinking of going narrower once I wear out the OEMs on my TDi but my rims limit me to 185, I think.

What size are the rims on your Bluemotion model and can you get anywhere near VWs claimed mileage?

                            • Yes Kaanage, that's the model.
Just had the energys fitted, they feel a smoother ride and run quieter but yet to give it a proper run.
In terms of mileage, I can get somewhere close to the VW claims, the trip computer often indicates over 80mpg (UK measurements) on a motorway run (and I do NOT drive excessively slowly). Around town I get well over 60mpg. The engine pulls from idle speed in all gears (the Bluemotion has a variable turbocharger rather than the fixed vane type in the normal TDi) so driving is quite effortless. Any time I drive a petrol vehicle now I find there's no 'pull' until I remember they need revs to function!
More on the tyres once I've covered a few miles.

Edit: the rims (description from the original sales brochure) are: Alloy wheels – low weight, four 5J x 14 ‘Jerez’ with 165/70 R14
low rolling resistance tyres and anti-theft wheel bolts.

                              • Hi all - this is a big thread and whilst I have tried to read as many pages as I can - I think a quick ask might get me the answers I need!

Ive got a 2009 polo tdi running the stock contis (premium contact 2 195/55/15) with less than 27K on them.
The front ones are pretty much scrap as far as I can tell - the rear seem to be fine.

These seem to be quite soft tyres and probably are no good for the driving I get up to a few times a year (i.e. dirt roads for a good 50+kms, camping, mud, awesomeness!) I am seriously surprised I have not had a puncture on the dirt roads as yet - the car is a little beast though and handles it really well!

I'll probably get a new set of tyres soon because under 30K with that much wear is just crap - can anyone give me some recommendations? I dont drive around town too much (short trips of under 20km maybe 3 times a week) and the majority of my k's are done on the highway, But as above - It does go off the beaten track a few times a year.

im looking for something that is decently wearing and good in the wet, able to handle a few off-road trips and isnt too expensive (Im a student and only work 2 days a week - car payments and rent pretty much take up the lot.)
I should mention I have a little bit of a heavy foot off the lights - perhaps I should change that

                                Any recommendations?

                                Thanks!
                                Eileen
