Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

  • Yeah I was going to go 215's but now thinking 205's are the way to go if you want to go low

    • There are a few factors with the tyre size;

If the offset is too low, the tyre can rub on the suspension
If the offset is to high, the tyre can rub on the arch

It seems to be much more relevant when you ride low... The Polo UK site has a lot more low riders, some good info on there...

      Hows the handling?

      • Havent been game yet to push it yet, not with it that low

Seems to be quite smooth, even at that height

The ex grilfriend had a MKV GTI and It rides a lot smoother than that

Josh went for a quick drive with me around the block, and I am sure he can notice a huge difference over the Hottunings

          • I took a couple of photos...
            After a wash...

I had to stop in at work, and I thought the car looked awesome...I don't think the picture shows quite what I seen though...

              • Reconnected my diverter valve after having the hose split where it connected with the valve's nipple.

The valve's nipple is just a tiny bit too big for the standard hose... so I replaced the hose with a slightly larger ID hose to fix this.

                      • Advanced my ignition timing 1.5% with CustomSettings.

Feels perkier. Will have to do some logging before I look at adding any more...

What are the risks "playing" with these settings when you are running a tune already (APR, GIAC, Revo, etc) ??

Surely these are already tweaked to a level that is considered safe, aren't you walking a bit of a tightrope tweaking further ? Would be interesting to here Guy or Gavin's opinion on how much play there exists in the tunes ?

This is my take on it. Everyone has opinions right.

If you log the car before and after making your tweaks and without trying to be a hero. I don't believe that you can wreak your engine.

This is part of the Phase 2 tune with Custom-Code. Part of the process, not the whole thing. You can't get yourself a Phase 2 for the price of an ebay cable.

Revo's SPS thingy does the same thing as far as I can tell.

You cannot increase boost above what the loaded software allows, so no explosions there. You can increase the ignition timing in .75 degree steps and when you get to about 6 degrees you get a warning.

I have been able to add up to 9 degrees on some Phase 2s, which I was surprised about. I pulled that back to 6, as it was a reasonably cool night and not really an average day.

The settings tool knows what changes you have made, even after the lead has been disconnected and the ECU cycled. It is easy to go back to where you started.

TBH you are not going to see night and day changes on a standard car.

                              Gavin

I have read about people disconnecting the N75 and using a manual boost controller to try to maintain a high boost setting (say constant 20psi), guessing it can be dangerous to your engine ?? as i think some of them tend to lean out

                                ?
