Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

                  • It's been a long old time since I posted in this thread.

                    Whats changed?

I moved to Melbourne to get locked down..........

With the Squib though, he is much the same. Got a new downpipe and system late last year as part of a development job with a locak exhaust manufacturer. So there's off the shelf turbo backs, downpipes or catback available in Australia.

Anyone can email me if there's interest.

I had to replace a bad waterpump earlier this year, it had sprung a leak. I just did the belt and pump as I am running the IE manual tensioner kit. I had been doing the, I'll just top it up thing once or twice a year.

At the same time I spotted that the oil leak I had been ignoring for about 2 years was pretty grim. So I bought the parts. New cam cover seal and a pair of cam seals. Got the parts in March, fitted on Monday afternoon. Wouldnt want to rush into it.... I also bought a tool for holding the cam pulley while undoing the bolt.

There was also a bit of oil dripping out of the gearbox. Another item that had been sat in the garage for a while.... Plus Lee was looking for one to stick a Diff into.

That swap went well and the old box went off to WA. Did that job get started yet?

I keep thinking that I'll port myself an exhaust manifold and swap out the big bore frankenturbo one I have. I have seen a decent/measurable improvement on the dyno. Having recently swapped one into a Polo running a Littco 280. It picked up noticeable power and torque. Partly due to the refinement of the tune but mostly the extra flow.Click image for larger version

ID:	1857858 I have done 3 manifolds for other lads. All of which I had intended to fit on the Squib. They just got sold first.

I have moved off the Bridgestones onto AD08Rs, as I do so few KMs these days. I dont have to worry about burning through a grand in tyres every year. Really rte them. These are on some Enkei RPF1. Keen to get back on the track. Phillip Island or maybe Sandown again?

                    • Great update Gav!

I am still looking at buying my old 9N3 back although COVID meant the current owner is hanging on to it a bit longer as he doesn't want to commit to another car without job security. Post COVID likely to happen though. May hit you up then for some bits

BTW, the UGP res delete on the R is pretty good. No drone and it sure made the pops at gearchanges so much louder ... and yes, a manual pops very nicely (very race car like) if driven properly

                      • Gav,

Is that 179kw on a stock internals?

Also with your RPF1s, what size configuration did you go with? I've been eyeing off a set in 16x7 with 35 offset. Hoping they will fit over 312mm brakes?

                        • I have rods in mine Grant. However, that's one is stock rods

My wheels are a Subaru offset. I forget exactly. I chucked in some 20mm spacers iirc. So they fit nice.
35/38mm is a common offset for VWs. Mine fit over the 312s easy

I've got the same wheels in an ET35 offset (though 17x. It'll really depend on the caliper you're running. I have Brembo's and it's very close, like 1-2mm clearance to the caliper. Whether it scrubs on the wheel arch on full lock will be dependent on ride height, but also being a 7" probably not likely to scrub. At a reasonable ride height, I've had 225/45 on that haven't scrubbed.

I'm on H&R springs so around 35mm drop over stock and OEM calipers. The reason I'm looking at the 16s is that I assumed the 17x8s with the minimum width tyre (215mm) would scrub. Do you think I would be safe with the 17x8 with a 215/40 tyre?

You might get occasional scrubbing on bigger hits due to the H&R's drop and bump stops, though with that being said, your rolling diameter would be unaffected. I wouldn't expect it to be frequent hits, if it did. You might get minor scrubbing on full lock, but I'm not sure as my car runs extra camber and castor, whereas you'll be more upright. Sorry, not much help to you on this one - though as the rolling diameter is unaffected, I'd not expect scrubbing to occur.
