Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

Did you have to shove the pipe a fair way in at the throttle body end?
Nope, what I did was cut about 3 cm off the other hardpipe and joined them with about 10cm of the straight 51mm silicon. The 2 hard pipes just touch and I rotated the TB hose to get the lot to sit nicely without pulling anything out of line.

Next time I have the bonnet up I'll take a picture. You can see the blue line on the std VW pipe and the datum on the TB.

Just in case anyone else is looking to do this install in the future, I am going to get a batch of the MAP sensor pipes made up. Hit me up if you are interested in one.

    • Had a look at the IATs on the way to work. Ambient temps 27.5 at home 26 at the airport. 1820- 1850 driving on the highway. Never saw IAT over 32 at cruise. Under boost temps dropped to within 2 degrees of ambient. This was just booting it in 4th or 5th overtaking or hammering up the on ramp.

Got to the car park and left it running, slowly crept over 30. The inlet manifold and TB were almost cold to the touch!!!! Awesome.

Still need to load a reliable tune to it, the AMD one click is boosting all over the place. 1.4 BAR sometimes, .5 others. No faults logged by my BT scanner and torque. I think it's pulling itself back but I haven't had time to look with VCDS yet.

I might drop the boost with Custom settings and see if it's happier??

Consider yourself hit up the cooler and pipes are on the way.

Great to hear your good results.

I haven't looked Seb. It's still running a stage 1 tune, which was sketchy at best. Weak AFRs at WOT below about 4500 revs. Just where you'd drive it, everyday. Could be all sorts of things happening.

I'll flash it over the weekend and see how much better it is.

Let me know when your pipe arrives Sean and I'll sort you out.

            • Had a pretty busy day at the House of Speed ( my place ). Jasn78 came over and gave our A4 wagon a machine polish all over. It's now looking a lot less neglected. Thanks Jason.

              Flashed a MK4 GTI ECU.

Finally flashed my Polo with a Phase 2 SAI delete tune. I'll be road testing it in the morning.

Then I practiced my plastidipping on the spare wheel from the polo. It was unused as far as I can tell with a brand new Continental on it.

I'll do the ones on the car in the next week I guess.

I was aching a bit this morning but I don't think it was helping you Jason. Maybe rolling around under the A3Q on Friday fitting the 42DD downpipe did me no favours. I need a convertible garage roof so I can fit a 2 post lift in.

Back on topic. I took a ride up to Nambour this morning. Pretty strong in gear performance from the Polo. Met up with Borasport. Had a trip around the block in his Phase 1 GTI and then he took a blast in mine.

The Phase 2 map is quite conservative on the timing front, so first impressions are usually a bit . So you need to get on with the logging and adding timing until the ECU starts pulling it back.

The boost is huge and was peaking off the top of my gauge, which reads to 1.5BAR. I pulled it back 10% with custom settings. It's now just touching 1.5, which is probably a bit much still. I am running the turbo off an A3 from the UK and I had the actuator off it during fitment. So I am thinking it's not set correctly. So one day soon, I'll run the car with the N75 disconnected and check what it's set too and then adjust it from there, if need be.

I just went to the shops with the kids and had the eldest hold the laptop for a 3rd gear run. No timing pull at all with 3 degrees added. Anthony and Jason have 9 degrees added from memory, so I reckon there's a way to go yet. It's 30 odd degrees again up here too.

                      • Hopefully the question is sufficiently on topic, in adjusting the timing, is that a Custom Code specific trait, or are you using accessible software to do this? Was it lemiwinks (or something like that)? So any of us (me with Superchips) can play with timing with a VCDS controller and software?

My only experience with fiddling with timing is on an 1986 1.3l carbie'd Barina, so the results were minimal at best. Advance it till it'd ping, than wind it back a few degrees.

And to clarify the benefit of advancing timing, does that make the car more punchy, better pick-up, or is it fuel consumption or something else?

Advancing timing makes more power. TBH custom-settings is a ghetto thing to a large degree. operating just like your Barina. In that you are adding the same amount of timing to every ignition point. As opposed to writing specific values into the map, as you would on a custom tune situation.

Just need the VCDS cable with intelligent mode off and the utility from the unitronics site. Works the same.

                          Lemmiwinks does the same thing.

                          • Added more timing and did another log, into 8 degrees now. Had one run peak at 175g/s, which according to the maths is 218hp.

Still haven't brought the boost down with the actuator tension yet. Need a quiet minute, with the engine cold to do that.

Not sure how long it would last in it's current config, feels strong though inspite of the 30 degree ambient temps!! #Go SeatSport!!!
