Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

  • Gavin's cheapy but getting more expensive GTI ;)

Picked up this Polo a few weeks back

Supposed to have had a bad engine. The price was right to take that into account though. Deal struck and Jimmy lined me up with a mate of a mate to bring it home for me.

Spent a few days tidying up the interior and prepping for a roadworthy. Quick oil change and some new back brakes. A pair of discs of my old A3 for the front

    It also came with leather.

And an AMD one click tune loader device.

Failed the roadworthy test on an oil leak (residue from the oil change) and a back light with a hole in it.

Borrowed a back light off vwindahouse and cleaned up the oil spillage. Roadworthy certificate issued.

    Went and got the rego.

    Result

I was on my way to swap lights back and gave it a bootful in 3rd and felt it hesitate. Changed into 4th and nothing......

So the diagnosis went like this. TIP pulled off and the shaft had heaps of end float and wobbled all over the place. Hence my posts for a turbo on Friday.

Nightphotographer came to the rescue in the end, Thanks mate.

I also have to mention some other forum members that offered solutions. Jimmy, vwthunder, Tim and redliner. Greg is pulling the motor from his Polo in few weeks time but was prepared to get this done earlier and Seb was going to do him a loaner to get around in.

Jimmy chased a turbo that came off for a K04 conversion, it went in the skip. Sad to hear that

    Thanks to all you blokes.

This was the shocker I pulled off today.

Holy sh*t fellow Gavin, they must have run that turbo without the TIP fitted and it's eaten a sparrow with a skeleton covered in adamanteum! Seriously though, I have never seen a turbo with a compressor wheel that bad, I've seen hot side wheels eject blades but nothing like this....

Looking at that carnage would be pointing at ingestion i reckon, its well bad, been a LONG time since i saw one as bad. Its not unusual to see cracks at the wastegate on any turbo though, but that one has one like the grand canyon, mixture of stuff going on there.
Yeah the irony of the new K03 going in the skip, i heard that it sat around for years and then got tossed during a house move, irony. But always the way. I see the classic walk into the fuel flap when opened has happened too hey, so common. Good score with leather.

I've seen a few 1.9TDI Golfs destroy impellers, mainly due to broken or siezed shafts.

These things are coming up quite cheap now.

Hope there are happier times ahead for this thing.

Who on earth threw away a K03S!?

Glad to be a helping hand though even if you did get in minutes before me to secure it! Would've genuinely flown to QLD and pushed it back to Albury haha - can't wait to see the progress though!

YOu may. It was 4 grand mate. It's had a batty, tow to my place, roadworthy, rego, brakes and some other stuff still to do. Plus the turbo of course.

What's the go with the filler cap mate? Looks like it's wearing primer at the moment?

If you want advice on how to accidentally remove it, I would advise pulling a vinyl wrap off without too much care. The thing just pops out lol. That was a real headf*ck at the time.

Yeah, it's been broken off. Might buy a can from VW to spray it myself..

Fingers crossed the turbo shows up today!!

Gav you'll be lucky if it shows up today - the post office said because of your post code or something it'd be more like Tues/Weds.
