Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

Had another yesterday, real bad, filled to the neck in water and air cleaner element saturated, and of course MIL on. No noises coming from this one as its fully drowned. Ran the car with the SAi corrugated pipes off and watched the spatter from the combi valve. Dont think it only happens to Polos, got a 307 Pug doing the same. Doesnt happen to them all but i would probably be asking you friendly tech to check the pipes and pump for any signs of moisture every service, costly if it gets hold of it. Way out is removal, some of the guys are trialling just that at the moment on here. All good if the MIl stays away,if you do remove it and do the mod then you will of course have more black smoke on start up as the super rich exhaust wont have extra air , no big deal really. im looking forward to see how the mods go to see if the lamp stays out.
    cheers

Mine was like this. Philip at Golfwagen said he took it out and turned it upside down and a tonne of water came out. Fixed now under stat. warranty.

          Mine was denied under warranty
They said the only way water could get into it was because I drove through a flood

Totally not mate, think you would be getting a new engine if that were the case hey. They are going to see more believe me.
Hope they replaced your combi valve mate otherwise it will happen again
            Cheers

Ah mate, i think you will right, im pretty sure its the short route between the Pog pump and the combi valve. Havent seen any R32 dramas to be fair, im sure you should be right, im running the R32 motor in my Passat ill be sure to keep an eye and update if need be

Well the engine light has come back on and it behaves differently. I'm pretty sure its another air pump problem. Car drives fine, but on start up it's different again. I will be pissed if it's the same thing. Have to wait a few weeks to get the car checked out as I'm too busy. WHat a head ****.

                Hi guys,

Been watching this thread for a while now as I have the same problem and it kicked in right after my service at around 70k kms!

I am looking at buying a second hand unit from eBay or local wrecker.

What I was wondering was, does anyone know of compatibility issues with the SAIs from other VW models?

The link below shows that part numbers '022 959 253' and '022 959 253 A' are replaced by the one unit, so i assume compatibility. However, all these model numbers get a bit confusing. There are also other numbers located on my particular SAI:ZSB '06A 131 333 E' and 7.22738.09

Secondary Air Pump VW Polo (9N_) 1.8 GTI from Pierburg - 7.22738.20.0

                Can anyone help with this?

                Cheers,
                Simon.

There are a couple that are very similar. The main differences seem to be in the direction in which the inlet and outlet ports are pointing.

So it shouldn't cause it to spit codes at me then?

Mine is doing this as well, and its really starting to get annoying. Has anyone found a good place to source these units other than directly from VW?

I wouldn't mess with it unless you can have a go pretty cheap. Could be different connections, etc.

Flooded SAI's aren't throwing codes? Would have thought that might be the first sign of issues. When I removed mine I had a code relating to air flow after a while.

Some do throw codes if they are bad enough, done plenty, do what some have including myself and delete the whole thing, and add resistors, so far no dramas, way cheaper option than a new unit

If you are not keen you are missing the point that its the combi valve that causes it in the first place, thats where the water comes from so if you want to keep it as is you need the pump AND the combi valve

As Jimmy said and as Clicht is doing, if you're havin problems just remove the SAI/combi valve/n249 vac system altogether. Saves a bit of weight (the SAI alone is way heavier than I expected), tidies up the engine bay, makes the DV more responsive...

Not a hard job though a bit fiddly taking off the combi (and be prepared to lose ~1L of coolant). Blanking plate and resistors all that is needed.

Mine threw codes. ECU picked up on the change in airflow.
I'd hold onto your SAI pump for a week after, just so you know you won't throw a code. The light on the dash is not an issue, but if the engine light should come on for a real reason, You dont see the change.

If anyone knows how to get around it, I'd happily bin mine again.

I lost a lot of coolant.
