  • Secondary air pump problems

Guys, im sure there is a few of you in here having dramas with your secondary air pump, noisy like a 747 spooling up at the terminal gate. Now fitted a couple that i thought was just wear and tear, but the latest was Shaneths, he has sold the car but i fitted a new one before it said goodbye. Now it was full of water. Ive done 2 since then and had to find out why. Its like this Shanes car had just been detailed and was thought to be water from the detailer. that was fine till i had to fit 2 more in the space of 2 weeks to 2 more Pogs around the 70k mark. If you experiencing this then its too late but before you just go ahead and fit a new one there is one other thing. The Combi valve that the air blows onto gets sticky in operation after a while. Ive taken one of a Pog at 130k and was stuck. Now when it sticks one of the by products of combustion (water) back feeds and goes where?? back into the pump and stuffs it. Fix is to fit a new pump yeah but i would go and replace the combi valve and gasket. Its a fact its happening. Done a few pumps now and gong to see a lot more, so save yourself when the time comes, or even if you think the 2nd air pump is getting a little but noisy at start up, get it off, takes 15 mins and check for moisture. These are not cheap if you have to keep fitting them and as the kilometeres climb the more stuck the valve gets

    Cheers
    Jmac

Does this only concern GTi's or all 9N3's?

Any of the brand with Secondary air pumps, done an Audi A4 b6 same deal. But with regards to Polo Gti seen 3 in total now. Really hard to tell until the pump starts getting over noisy. Its normally terminal for the pump then but my main reason for posting was if you end up having to replace one then you should only have to do one if you follow the advice

I'll just blank mine off if it happens

Thanks for the heads up though Jimmy

Also guys while on topic of issues and replacements, had my car at VW the other week and they noted there was a recall on the coil packs... A new set has now been fitted and I must say the car feels quite a bit stronger after. Might be a heads up to get your cars checked next time you are near a VW place. Mine is an 02/06 Build - 07/06 Compliance vehicle

So do only the petrol engined 9N3s (and other VWs/cars) have them?

Plenty other makes have them, but mainly pointing out to you guys here in the Pog section as ive seen a few now, all have needed new pumps but will return for another pump sooner as the valve keeps sticking. Ive spoke to some guys about this and they reckon the dealer told them its where its mounted and it suck in water, nup, not that at all, and you could be led to think its after a detail as its just stale water, that just happens to be a by product of combustion. Dont panic though ive seen a couple but have seen dozens of Polos, could add to you list of checks when doing a service perhaps along with one i mentioned way back in the piece, the N75 valve rubbing and breaking the wiring, if you havent read this check it out and move if nesc, 2 minute job.

Can you provide any more info on this? Recall ref, coilpack code, etc? Not sure where I would start, but always interested in a free repacement of potentially dodgy parts.

                    Hi Jmac,

Just curious. There seems to be a few generic secondary air pumps for sale on Ebay such as this one:

Air Pump Secondary VW Beetle Jetta Golf Passat Audi A4 | eBay

Is there any reason they wouldn't fit the polo? Bit cheaper than the $750 for an OEM VW pump.

Jmac, so if my secondary pump is working well now - what can I do prevent this to happen? check for the combo valve and gasket regularly?

That coil recall is interesting. I will call VW and ask. My car was on the road in Feb 2006, so probably manufactured in end of 2005.

I took my car in aswell to get the central locking fixed and they booked me in again a week later for the recall. At uni atm.. but will check my car later for the recall code. Pretty sure it was the coil pack... was about 4 months ago..totally meant to mention it haha

                              Hey guys

I've had a light come on in my dash and had it read by golfwagen, they believe its the secondary air pump. Has anyone else had the light come on?

Golfwagen want to double check the relay and other possibilities first before they replace the air pump. I'm hoping its just a relay/electrical issue.

                              Cheers
