stage 2 ran 137.8kW i think (with BMC), so not a big difference at all. obviously still needs some work. they did not run it without the with the seat intake and k&n. i'm sure Guy will put up the graphs for the stage 2, there is a lot more power in the lower rev range but tapers off from the peak very quickly.
Thanks Rhys. In that case ... think I saved myself about $600 (BMC and small replacement battery) for the sake of about 2-3 kw.
it was interesting to see that Sharkie (Johan - sorry if its spelled wrong) had a 5kW gain over me with APR chip and FMIC, and Tosspot (Sam - i know thats the right spelling!) had a 7kW gain over me with the APR chip and downpipe. however over the 4 runs they each had Johan's power and AFR (air fuel ratio) curve were pretty consistent. Sam's, on the hand, had a relatively consistent power curve over the 4 runs but after 2 runs the AFR curve changed dramatically as heatsoak started to set in. any more runs and i think the power would have dropped significantly....like mine
this is why this day was so good because we could see the affects of the mods such as these and go home to think about whether it is worth getting the extra 7kW for a few good hits with the downpipe or a consistent 5kW with the FMIC.

True (Dammit!) ... so what we're saying is (for consistently good runs) ... we need both the FMIC AND the downpipe. $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$

Dave
well yeah i guess so...look at eddy with the exhaust system and FMIC, he had 4 consistent runs 12kW above me....which is right, 7kW d'pipe and 5kW FMIC.

Some good results there fellas - 7kw for the DP is consistent with my DP testing (6kw) - and with a less restrictive cat-back and high flow muffler, it can go higher. It seems both the DP and FMIC are worthwhile mods, both have their advantages/disadvantages, eg cost, heat soke. Ideally upgrading the intake, entire exhaust and FMIC yields awesome results, but at least this helps ppl make more informed choices from a cost/benefit perspective
Has anyone asked an exhaust shop how much to make a downpipe? Got to be better than paying $1100 for the (overpriced) aftermarket ones. I mean, think about it, $50 for the materials and a couple of hours max for the cutting and welding.

Guy (sorry Alex actually did) logged all the data and they will produce a nice set of comparisons.
A few interesting things to take home ....
A SEAT intake & K&N does not deliver any extra power .... HOWEVER .... if you look at the power curves the top end has a much broader spread of power and chipped with SEAT etc means you have above 115kw ATW up to 6500rmin. Without SEAT etc power drops off noticably above 5500rmin, so at 6500 you are down 15kw on a SEAT version.
A FMIC will keep your power more consistent over time with minimal loss as its gets hotter. Mine is good for an instant 5kw ATW at any temp.
The downpipe is a really wortwhile addition with 7kw ATW while it is cool. I'd buy one for sure soon.
Jason & Eddy's cars has proven that FMIC's & exhausts are worth at least 132kw ATW.
BMC intake on Eddy's car (APR ECU, FMIC & Exhaust) without stage 2 was worth .6kw ATW. This is not a worthwhile investment unless you have a K04.
Stage 2 on Eddy's cars was worth 2kw ATW. Not much there .... HOWEVER .... the power curve has totally changed. Max power was now made at 5100rmin instead of 6500rmin and the curve below that was noticably more muscular. I believe that for day to day driveability this might actually be worthwhile unless you are revving your car to 7000rmin all the time.

Yeah it was a great day with excellent info output and really handy for mod decision making. Thanks to Guy & Alex for organising it and Neumanns garage for hosting it so well.
Yea great to catch up with everyone again. Thanks to Guy for taking me for a quick spin in the Golf - it's insane! I reckon we need more of these social type events (i.e. lunch).
I'll might start looking into a custom dump pipe (perhaps like Timbo linked to above, using the stock cat). Might wait another 6 months or so for the FMIC, but they are both on the cards for the future. EBC pads first though!
