Any update on this issue and general reliability of the GTI DSG- just weighing up whether to take the plunge and buy one as they're pretty good bang for Buck (as long as the DSG behaves itself)

They are not faultless and no one is going to endorse a gearbox that has recorded failures. A lot of it is to do with the luck of the draw but do note that usually only the unfortunate owners that have had issues with their DSG will air it on a forum.

There will of course be owners who just don't have any issues with their DSG but they don't usually come on a forum and jinx themselves by saying that their DSG is faultless...

Exactly, and we should remember that not only VW has issues with this type of gearbox, eg I read that there is a class action on the Ford 'boxes now ongoing.

I drove a loan 2015 GTI with 400kms on it and it thumped like the 'box was trying to come into the cabin at one point on the drive I did, but the rest of the time it was faultless. My MY12.5 GTI slipped its clutches and had them replaced at 12000kms, seemed ok after that and never thumped. 2 cars, 2 faults... thats my experience, your milage may vary.

Any one have this experience ? Does it smooth out after a while.. It only had 19klms on the clock when we got it so not sure if it needs some wearing in

You will need to read the whole thread, this South Africa member claims a software update fixed it but he has not been heard from since. Others have found a software update did not work.

My car has done it maybe 6 times in 18 months so it's no big deal for me and I love the DSG. It only happened at full throttle 2nd to 3rd, using the paddles and the revs. were not real high, around 3500-4000rpm, so max torque.

I can go full throttle in S mode and 2nd to 3rd is smooth and quick as at any revs. - can you try this on yours in S and update me?? thank you. I never use D.

                Hey car_nut,

My girlfriend has this problem and I can agree that it only happens in manual mode. Only 2nd to 3rd. Red line change in manual mode isn't as bad but does still have a noticeable sound/feel that isn't as smooth as any other gear change and mode.

Sport mode and drive mode are perfect.

We are also hoping for a fix asap. Too scared to really enjoy the car in manual mode until the fix.

Thanks SPA50. I've sent a PM off to our South Africa friend, not hopeful as he has not posted for some time.

It would be nice to take some good info. to the dealer. Otherwise it will be the usual "they all do that" and or in my case "it's caused by your mods".

                  Cheers

                    Yeah very true.

My girlfriends is bone stock and does it so mods are completely irrelevant

I received a PM from deepblue in South Africa -
                      Hey car_nut,

There has been a new software released on the MY17 Polo Gtis. My vehicle was flashed to this version. The dealer needs to raise a technical query to the factory to enable this flash. The version on my car was 0610 and the new one is higher than this. I think it was in the 1000s.

                      Deepblue

Maybe it's time to contact my dealer.

Further info just now from deepblue which I would like to think might help us resolve this issue -

                        Hey man,

It was flashed to 0901. Let me know if yours gets any better with the software. Mine was fixed 100%.

I spoke to my dealer today, service manager said "no clue, we do not know if there is an update available until we hook your car up, VW Australia will not tell us and it will take at least 3 hours after we hook your car up to get a response back on any available software update".

I have my car booked in Friday next week for a test drive only so at least the issue can be logged, assuming I can replicate the issue, under my service record. I expect I will then sit back and wait for maybe another forum member to test the latest software. The service manager also stated that the software for a South Africa car is likely different to Australia's version, sounds like bs.

                            So...let me get this straight.

VW finally offers the Polo GTI with a decent engine (after the 1.4 twincharge catastrophe in the pre-updated Polo GTI) and the option of a proper manual gearbox (which is how it should have been offered since day 1) and people are still buying them with perhaps the most unreliable gearbox (7 speed DSG) in the history of mankind, with literally dozens of people on this forum every week talking about mechatronics replacement, clutch packs burnt out etc etc.

Why are people still buying cars with this gearbox?? Honestly, i am totally baffled as to why.

^ smart boy. More people should follow this guys approach (or buy a manual Polo GTI).

Something i've read on the latest MY16 Polo GTI is the Manual variant is rated for 320nm of torque, but the DSG only 250nm ? Does this mean the DSG Variant has had a cap put on the engine to prevent it lunching the DSG???

                                Such wierd wierd stuff.
