I paid $150 ish for my 15,000km service and about $300 for my 30,000 from Canberra VW centre. I have them do all the work on my polo, wouldn't take it anywhere else. Knew as soon as I saw the spread of cars in the garage the first time I went there that I had taken it to the right place.

If Narre was okay, purely prestige opposite fountain gate is great, they have loan cars (polos of all things ) and are factory Vw, Bmw and Renault trained.
ended up going here, and i can highly recommend the place. very nice staff, good pricing and quick service. a loan car is also available !
Is there anything special about a VW Polo service, like an unusual way to get the oil out or is there gold flakes in the oil that makes the service so expensive or something?
Cheapest price I could find for my 75,000km (just an oil & filter change) was $315 at a Euro independent Mechanic which I have used before.
I'd prefer not to go back to VW if I can help it.
What are you guys paying?

for someone who doesn't have a VW and is here lurking what kinda oil does the polo use?
Anything with the official VW 504.00/507.00 listed spec. I use Shell Helix Ultra ECT for the TDI (can be used for the petrol VW's too) which is 504.00/507.00 rated and is $79 for 5 litres from Supercheap. The filter is like $10 online (for a WIX filter for the TDI).
Guess I've been lucky with the XR5. Fully synthetic 5W/0W-30 regularly goes on sale for 35ish per 5L bottle. It takes 6.3 liters but nothing like your cars...damn, Must hurt every time. Guess these would be the things to look for as i'm looking to jump into a GTI in the next few months.
I recently serviced my 6C and used Castrol Edge 5w/30 (brochure came with the car I the log book pack). Was half price from Supercheap on Bathurst weekend so worked out beautifully.
No worries about warranty, I am a mechanic by trade and got a mate to stamp the book for me (I have been off the tools for the past ten years and don't work at a servicing centre).
Did you use the VW 504.00/507.00 approved version of Edge 5W-30?
The standard Edge isn't VW approved. From Supercheap, "Castrol Edge DPF Engine Oil" is the only Castrol oil that is 504.00/507.00 approved.
It probably won't make your engine blow up, but VW can deny warranty claims due to the wrong oil if they want to.
