Guess I've been lucky with the XR5. Fully synthetic 5W/0W-30 regularly goes on sale for 35ish per 5L bottle. It takes 6.3 liters but nothing like your cars...damn, Must hurt every time. Guess these would be the things to look for as i'm looking to jump into a GTI in the next few months.
So your choice of probably $35000 car is going to be decided - or at least influenced by - 6 x 5L bottles of oil at an extra $40 a bottle - ie. 6 services sees you through to 90K in 6 years - maybe the extra $240. Can think of a lot of other things that can happen to the car in that time that could chew up that pitiful saving.

My dealer in Auckland charged the standard NZ$361 for the first service, really just oil and filter. It had to go in for a recall anyway, otherwise I would have done it myself at home. Annoyingly, despite the cost, they used a cheap Mobil 10W-40, a 502.00 oil whose weight is not the first choice for the Polo.

The Castrol brochure supplied with the owner's manual is for Edge Pro, a longlife-type oil (504.00)
Castrol Edge at Supercheap is a 502.00, not longlife but perfectly allowable if you change on a distance (I think 15,000 km) or time basis (1 year.)

Because my car's display indicated a service was required after exactly one year, I'm wondering if there is a VCDS configuration setting (set for this market) for maintenance based on using normal or longlife oil? Also noting, in the service book, there is a tick mark if a longlife oil is used.

In Aus and probably NZ Longlife servicing is NOT done
It is all 12 months 15,000km between services. Most of us would use a 504/507 oil and the cheapest in Aus is usually Penrite Enviro+ which is a VW approved oil. Anyone who chooses to use a non approved oil is dancing with death should anything go wrong because of it.

Both my cars are under 5 years old and have only done 16000 in the Polo and 26000 in the Passat. Both have had a service each 12 month period so the Passat had its 60000 recently.

Just bought a Demo MY15 Polo GTI with 4900 on the clock. I noticed the Service sticker on Windscreen said next service due at 2000KM But it has done more than that. I called up the Dealership and they said the 2000k service if an inspection service, and That id had been done. There is no Proof tho it has been done, And if it WAS done, wouldnt the 2000k sticker have been removed?

Also do people here abide by the 15000k service intervals, of do yous do oil changes, filter, etc abit earlier? I want to get fresh Oils and Filters ASAP, Whats the best way going about it?

Just to be clear, 502.00 is an approved oil.

You're splitting hairs over a tyre-kicking inspection, that is not part of the service schedule. It's just a complimentary thing that most dealerships offer. Although, I'm sure they'd be happy to do it retrospectively, and apply an updated sticker and stamp the books accordingly.

Personally, I'd leave the original oil in there til the first actual service at 15K/12 months. It will have a bearing on a potential excess oil consumption claim down the line.

Either that or pay the dealership to do an early service - that way any oil issues should be covered later down the line.
Being an MY15 with the 1.8T though, oil consumption shouldn't be as big of an issue as the older 1.4TC engines.

Exactly. Just because the dealer suggests VW 504 doesn't mean that VW 502 isn't approved. It's the first choice given in the Owners Manual!

Here's an interesting question........if an owner (home mechanic) has changed their oil before the first service and it starts to consume/burn off oil, how would a dealership determine the customer changed the oil in the first place?

Noting some parts are marked with blue/white paint pens at the factory as part of QA etc.

                    Thx!

I never said it wasnt. Just said most use the 504. I do so I can use the same in both cars.

If you use a a 502 it must also be an APPROVED 502/505 oil and only in a petrol engine.

I was given a Castrol brochure when the car was new and told to use the 504, which the dealer has put in it ever since.

I now supply my own oil as its much cheaper to do so

Aren't all VW 502 oils by definition approved VW 502 oils?

Some oil manufacturers will be sneaky and say something like 'meets or exceeds VW 502.00/505.00 specifications' but the oil is not actually approved by VW.

                            Au contrare.

There's 'Approved', which means the oil company has paid the fees, sent samples, and actually sought approval from VW.

Then there's 'Meets, or exceeds the requirements of...', which basically places the onus on the oil manufacturer if your DPF or catalytic converter dies from using it.

Only if it says "Approved For VW" on the label IE Nulon Says "Suitable For" Which is definitely different to "Approved"

Simply, as said they havent gone through the Approval process which costs quite a bit of money to get done and so they rely on mugs to think what they say is the same as what they havent said.

Its like buying Printer ink There is genuine ink and "Suitable for" ink. Try getting a warranty claim if you use "Suitable for" instead of genuine anything.
